Nigerian New Music Friday: Fireboy DML Drops ZUKO! and Blaqbonez Answers With NOMADINHO

Fireboy DML's 13-track ZUKO!, featuring Lojay on GODDESS, and Blaqbonez's NOMADINHO: 4TH PRIME lead an October 16 Nigerian slate with Victony's SLICK remix and Cruel Santino's Big Drop.

Nigerian music owned this New Music Friday, and it did so with two full albums landing on the same morning. Fireboy DML released ZUKO!, his fifth studio album, and Blaqbonez answered with NOMADINHO: 4TH PRIME, while a heavyweight Victony remix and a new Cruel Santino record rounded out a slate that NBG Africa and The NATIVE both flagged as the week's Nigerian headline.

ZUKO! runs 13 tracks and arrives through YBNL Nation and EMPIRE, following Fireboy's 2024 album Adedamola. The rollout had already signalled range: pre-release singles included Dopamine and Story, and Imali, a collaboration with South African artists Jazzwrld and Thukuthela that leaned into three-step Afro house rhythms far from the soft, melodic Afrobeats on which Fireboy first built his name after the global breakthrough of Peru. The announcement imagery — Fireboy in a tailored red suit with bandages wrapped around his head — suggested a bolder, more cinematic chapter, and the finished album's guest list backs that reading.

The fresh cut drawing the most attention on release day is GODDESS, which pairs Fireboy with Lojay. Two of the most melodic voices in contemporary Afro-R&B sharing one record is an event in itself, and the track sits at the centre of an album that also draws in dancehall and Southern African sounds. For an artist whose catalogue already runs from the 2019 debut Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps through Apollo and Playboy, ZUKO! is being read as a consolidation record: the pen stays sharp, but the palette keeps widening.

Blaqbonez, meanwhile, kept his own October tradition alive. The rapper has built a near-annual habit of releasing projects in October, and NOMADINHO: 4TH PRIME continues a run that includes the deluxe edition of his fourth album No Excuses and a collaboration with Asake. The album's standout fresh collaboration is YAHOOZE, featuring Victony — a title that nods to a familiar phrase in Nigerian pop culture, and a pairing that sets Blaqbonez's rap-led delivery against Victony's singing. Other reported guests across the project include Judah Earl and TML Vibez.

Victony, in fact, had a double day. Beyond his Blaqbonez feature, he expanded his own record SLICK into a remix featuring Don Toliver and Summer Walker, turning a solo song into a three-artist collaboration that adds an international rap voice and an American R&B feature. It is the kind of crossover construction that has become a signature of Nigeria's current generation: build the song at home, then open a second front abroad without sanding down the original.

Cruel Santino supplied the slate's left-field energy with Big Drop, made with Zaylevelten and OctobersRich. The NATIVE's account points to synth-led production, syncopated drums and a late beat switch, and connects the record to Santino's forthcoming project K.O.T.B – The Bomberman Chronicles. Santino has long been the standard-bearer for Nigeria's alté movement, and a gritty, shape-shifting single fits his role as the scene's restless experimenter.

Taken together, the four releases map the breadth of Nigerian music in 2026 in a single day: Fireboy's polished Afro-R&B, Blaqbonez's rap showmanship, Victony's crossover ambition and Santino's alternative edge. October has become an unofficial album season in Lagos, and this year two of its biggest names chose the exact same Friday. Listeners win either way.

Context helps explain why this particular Friday landed so hard. Nigerian music's global rise has moved through distinct waves — the Afrobeats breakthrough years, the amapiano crossover, and now a period in which Lagos artists treat album season as a headline event in itself. Fireboy's trajectory mirrors that arc. Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps made him a critics' favourite at home; Apollo widened the frame; Playboy carried the afterglow of Peru, the 2021 single whose remix with Ed Sheeran turned him into a genuinely international name. Adedamola, named for himself, read as a homecoming record. ZUKO!, by contrast, has been presented from its first teaser as a persona record — the red suit, the bandages, the exclamation point — and listeners spent release day debating what the character means.

Blaqbonez brings a different kind of theatre. Few Nigerian artists market themselves with his consistency or humour, and the NOMADINHO title extends a long-running joke about his self-styled global loverboy persona into a full album era — billed as the fourth prime of that character. Underneath the branding sits a serious catalogue argument: project after project, most of them arriving in October, has kept him in the centre of Nigerian rap conversation since his 2018 debut EP Bad Boy Blaq. Pairing him with Victony on YAHOOZE is astute casting, because Victony's own year has been building toward exactly this kind of crossover week.

The SLICK remix underlines the point. Don Toliver brings a melodic Houston rap sensibility that sits naturally beside Victony's phrasing, while Summer Walker's presence connects the record to American R&B's most-streamed lane. Remixes can be cynical; this one reads as a genuine re-composition of the song's audience. And with Cruel Santino's Big Drop pointing toward a full forthcoming project, October 16 may be remembered less as a single release day than as the opening weekend of Nigeria's album autumn.
