NWSL DECISION DAY — FIELD GUIDE

Gotham Are One Point From a First Shield — San Diego Need Help

All eight NWSL matches kick off together on Sunday at 2:00 PM PT / 5:00 PM ET. Gotham FC clinch their first Shield with a win or a draw at home to Utah. San Diego Wave must win at Bay FC and hope Gotham lose. And in Cary, North Carolina and Denver play each other knowing a draw eliminates them both. Your field guide, in the order to watch it.

Eight matches. Sixteen teams. One kickoff time. At 2:00 PM Pacific on Sunday, the NWSL regular season ends everywhere at once — and almost nothing is settled. The Shield is open. The last playoff spot is open. Not one of the eight playoff seeds is locked. Here is where to look, in order.

Watch the Shield first. Gotham FC, top of the table on 58 points, need one point at home against the Utah Royals to clinch the first NWSL Shield in club history. That is the whole equation: win or draw, and the Shield is theirs. For a club that has won NWSL championships in 2023 and 2025 — the defending champions — the Shield is the major trophy that has always got away. Win it on Sunday, to go with June's Challenge Cup, and Gotham head into the playoffs chasing a treble.

The only team that can stop them is San Diego Wave, three points back on 55 — and San Diego do not control any of it. The Wave must win at Bay FC and have Gotham lose. That levels the clubs on 58 points, and the tiebreakers then swing San Diego's way: goal difference enters the day at Gotham +14, San Diego +13, and a Gotham defeat paired with a Wave win flips that margin. Do not sleep on the spoiler, either. Bay FC are 14th, playing only for pride — and they have already beaten San Diego this season, 1–0 in San Diego in May, when Racheal Kundananji scored early and Jordan Silkowitz saved a penalty. Utah, meanwhile, are no soft touch: already in with the first playoff berth in club history, they are playing for seeding and a possible home quarterfinal.

Second screen: the cruellest game on the slate. North Carolina Courage, on 42 points, host Denver Summit, on 41, in Cary — the two teams chasing the final playoff spot, playing each other for it. A draw eliminates both of them. Read that again. If that game finishes level, North Carolina and Denver are both out and Seattle Reign take the last berth without their result mattering at all. North Carolina go through with a win if Seattle fail to beat Orlando. Denver's path is narrower still: win, and Seattle must lose. There is no version of caution that helps either side in Cary. Both have to chase the game.

Which makes Seattle the control room of the whole race. The Reign, eighth on 44 points, hold the spot today, and a win at home against Orlando Pride settles it — no help needed, no other score matters. Anything less, and their season rides on Cary. It is also, not incidentally, a farewell stage: Jess Fishlock, the only player still with her original club from the league's inaugural season in 2013, has announced she will retire after this season. Seattle will want her story to continue into next week.

Everything else on Sunday is seeding — and seeding is not a footnote. The top four host quarterfinals when the playoffs open on Friday, November 6, and with no seed locked, every match can move somebody's November. So watch it in this order: Gotham–Utah on the main screen, San Diego's chase and the Cary elimination game on the others, ESPN2's whip-around for the rest. By about 4:00 PM Pacific, a first Shield will have an owner, eight playoff teams will have an order, and at least one season will have ended in the cruellest way this format can arrange.

Decision Day: Sunday, November 1, 2026 — all eight matches kick off 2:00 PM PT / 5:00 PM ET. Gotham FC vs Utah Royals on ESPN; the rest of the slate on ESPN+, with the whip-around show on ESPN2. Playoffs begin Friday, November 6.
