Madison Square Garden has a short list of people it hangs banners for, and most of them wore Knicks or Rangers jerseys. On Saturday night, Harry Styles joined the list — again.
Styles closed his Together, Together residency on Oct. 31, the 30th and final night of a run that turned the Garden into his house every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday for 10 weeks. To mark it, Knicks captain Jalen Brunson took the stage and presented him with a banner celebrating the 30 consecutive nights, Rolling Stone reported from the finale. Brunson wore a "Techno Is My Boyfriend" hat — a Styles tour in-joke he has been photographed in before — and the two shared a quick hug while the building cheered.
This is not a first. Styles got a banner at the Garden in 2022, after a 15-night run — and that night he told the crowd exactly who it belonged to: "Any time that you come to Madison Square Garden and you see that, remember it's because of you. That is ours." This time he simply doubled the number. Thirty nights is a record-breaking residency for the building, a run Madison Square Garden Entertainment billed from the start — Aug. 26 through Oct. 31 — as the centerpiece of his tour.
The finale was also the second night of Harryween, and Styles dressed for the holiday the way only a man who has played the room 30 times would dare: as a New York City rat. In costume, he covered Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer" — a New York band's most New York song, sung by a man in a rat suit in the middle of Manhattan. People confirmed the costume and the cover from inside the show. It landed one night after he opened Harryween as Elvis, then changed into a replica of the outfit he wore to his X Factor audition at 16 and sang Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely" — the same song that started all of this.
The Brunson presentation had history behind it, too. Back in September, on the residency's ninth night, Styles spotted Brunson in the crowd, shouted him out from the stage and crowned him "King of New York" — a moment the New York Post, NBC Sports and Yahoo Sports all caught at the time. The Garden is Brunson's building on basketball nights. On Saturday, he returned the favor in it.
Styles knew what the banner meant before he finished earning this one. Earlier this month, around the second anniversary of the death of his One Direction bandmate Liam Payne, he reflected on the 2022 banner hanging in the rafters: "It means a lot to be able to look up there at my name up there from the last tour. There are so many people, friends, and people that I've worked with, that I would've never been able to do this without."
The whole Together, Together tour — Amsterdam, London, Brazil and Mexico City before New York — was built on that idea: the shared room, the shared night. It's the theme of "Carla's Song," from his album Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.: "It's all waiting there for you." For 30 nights at the Garden, it was. Now there's a banner to prove it — presented by the building's other king.
