Jawan Flips an OutKast Classic on His First Original Epic Records Single, 'Fresher Than Us'

Jawan’s first original single for Epic Records samples OutKast’s “So Fresh, So Clean” — itself built on a 1977 Joe Simon record — and turns it into a romantic R&B ballad produced by Mel & Mus.

Jawan has released “Fresher Than Us,” the first original single of his Epic Records era, and he built it on one of the most recognisable grooves in hip-hop history. The singer formerly known as Jawan Harris samples OutKast’s “So Fresh, So Clean” on the new record, Rated R&B reported, flipping a Southern rap classic into a smooth, romantic R&B ballad about a new love that makes two people feel untouchable. Produced by Mel & Mus, the single is out now.

The distinction in his Epic run matters. YouKnowIGotSoul described “Fresher Than Us” as his second single since joining the Epic Records roster earlier this year, following his SWV-inspired “Always On My Mind” featuring SIS in May. Rated R&B drew the line more precisely: the May release was a rendition of an SWV song, which makes “Fresher Than Us” his first original single under Epic. Both accounts agree on the sequence — a beloved cover first, then the original statement — and on what the new record is trying to prove.

On the track, Jawan sings over knocking 808 kicks about a connection so pure it makes a couple feel like the coolest pair on the planet, Rated R&B reported. The hook states the whole thesis in two lines, as Rated R&B wrote them out: “Ain’t nobody fresher than us, together / And can’t nobody do it like us, we just do it better.” It is confidence framed as chemistry — not one person showing off, but two people who are convinced that what they have together cannot be matched.

What Jawan Says the Song Is About

“With ‘Fresher Than Us,’ I wanted to capture that excitement of meeting someone and having a connection so undeniable that nobody can touch what you have together,” Jawan told Rated R&B. “Classic R&B has always influenced my approach to music, especially that blend of melody, emotion, and storytelling.” The quote explains the sample choice as more than nostalgia. For Jawan, classic records are a working method: take the melody, emotion and storytelling he grew up studying, and rebuild them around a feeling happening right now.

He was just as direct about the source material. “OutKast gave us something timeless with ‘So Fresh, So Clean,’ and being able to bring my own R&B style to that iconic production while staying true to my sound made this one even more special,” he told Rated R&B. “It’s been a long time coming.” That last line carries weight for an artist who first signed a major deal as a preteen and has been working toward a moment like this — an original single, on a major roster, built on a sample he had to earn — ever since.

The Sample Has Its Own Sample

The lineage underneath “Fresher Than Us” runs three generations deep. “So Fresh, So Clean” was the third and final single from OutKast’s 2000 classic Stankonia, Rated R&B noted, and it was produced by Organized Noize. That record itself sampled Joe Simon’s 1977 song “Before the Night Is Over.” So Jawan’s single is a soul record inside a hip-hop record inside an R&B record — 1977 feeding 2000, and 2000 feeding a singer who treats that whole chain as his foundation rather than his costume.

Handled carelessly, a sample this famous can swallow a young artist whole. The early verdict is that Jawan avoided that trap. Rated R&B included “Fresher Than Us” in its 10 Essential New R&B Releases of the week, placing the single alongside new music from Snoh Aalegra and Lucky Daye, and SoundRNB likewise carried the record in its weekly R&B recap coverage. For a first original Epic single, that company is the point: the record is being received not as a novelty flip, but as a song that belongs in the week’s real R&B conversation.

Making Vulnerability the Brand

The other thread running through Jawan’s rollout is emotional candour, and he talks about it as a deliberate stance for male R&B artists. “It’s already scary for us to be vulnerable, because it’s easy to be labeled as emotional or soft,” he said, via YouKnowIGotSoul. “I think the toughest thing for men to do is to have that outlet.” It is an unusual thing for a singer launching a swagger record to say — the single brags, the artist explains why bragging is not the whole job — and it connects “Fresher Than Us” back to the traditional R&B pillars YouKnowIGotSoul credited him with championing: strong songwriting, melody and unapologetic emotional depth.

That balance is visible across his year. The May rendition of “Always On My Mind” showed reverence for SWV and the 1990s R&B era that shaped him. Earlier this year he also appeared on “I Wish,” the closing track of 21 Savage’s 2025 album What Happened to the Streets?, Rated R&B reported — a placement that put his voice at the end of a major rap album and introduced him to listeners who may never have heard the name Jawan Harris. The Epic campaign is now stitching those threads together: the feature, the cover, and finally the original.

Why This Debut Had to Land

First original singles under new major-label deals carry a specific burden — they are the record the whole signing gets judged by, fairly or not. Jawan’s answer was to reach for one of the most durable productions in rap history and sing over it like an R&B traditionalist, which is either a risk or a declaration, depending on how well it works. On the evidence collected by Rated R&B and YouKnowIGotSoul, it works because the sample never becomes the story. The story is a singer describing, in his own words, exactly what he wanted the song to feel like — excitement, connection, and two people nobody can touch — and then delivering it over 808s with the melody up front.

“Fresher Than Us” is available now via Epic Records. Whether it becomes the record that defines Jawan’s second act will be decided by listeners over the coming weeks, but the terms are set: classic R&B values, contemporary production, and a singer willing to say the vulnerable part out loud. Nobody, as the hook insists, is supposed to do it fresher. He has now put that claim on record — literally.
