A normal media room starts with the room. Walls get treated, speakers get buried in them, seats get pointed at a screen, and the architecture has to cooperate before the sound can. L-Acoustics — the French company whose systems run major concert venues — looked at that arrangement and moved the room inside the furniture instead.
Island is a self-contained personal auditorium: a circular lounge with the loudspeakers built into its own rim. Thirteen speakers face the listeners from the front arc, five more cover the rear, and two subwoofers sit behind the seats — every driver derived from the company's professional concert designs, as Cineluxe confirmed hearing the unit at L-Acoustics' Westlake Village headquarters. Total system power is 20,000 watts — in a seat built for two, that is less about volume than about never running out of headroom.
The processing is the point. Island runs on L-ISA, L-Acoustics' Immersive Hyperreal Sound technology, developed for live shows and built around placing sounds as objects in space rather than feeding fixed channels. At home it feeds the company's BluSpace standard and its Bubbles catalogue — limited, numbered-edition recordings made for this kind of playback, controlled from the Bubble Deck console built into the Island. Founder Christian Heil, Island's creative force, put it plainly at the launch: "This is not just another loudspeaker" — the idea is to put the listener in the conductor's seat, on stage with the band, or inside the film.
Because the sound field is generated at the seat, Island asks nothing of the room around it: no in-wall installation, no acoustic treatment. At the push of a button the whole auditorium rotates a full 360 degrees — toward the screen for a film, toward the windows for daylight, away for privacy. The finishes are furniture finishes: two high-gloss lacquered wood veneers, Natural and Night, with upholstery to order.
Island began as a show concept — the L-ISA Private Island turned heads at ISE 2018 — and became Island Prestige, the production form unveiled at ISE 2020. L-Acoustics later paired it with C SEED's unfolding M1 television as Maunakea: Island is specified the way serious architecture is, through certified integrators, project by project.
One honest limit, in the company's own framing: a recording of Island cannot reproduce what Island does. The film explains the idea; the immersive field exists only in the seat. That is either the product's flaw or its defence against becoming a commodity.
Previously's Take
Every other luxury audio product asks you to build a room around it. Island is the refusal of that bargain — concert-hall thinking shrunk to furniture that carries its own acoustics and spins to face whatever the evening is.
