The Mayfair witches are leaving New Orleans — and heading for the most famous witch town in America. At New York Comic Con on Friday, AMC unveiled the third season of its Anne Rice drama under a new title, Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches: Salem Coven, confirmed a premiere date of Wednesday, December 30 on AMC and AMC+, and screened a first teaser. Alexandra Daddario’s Rowan Fielding is going to Salem, Massachusetts. Salem, characteristically, has plans for her.

02 The announcement: a title, a date and a teaser on the Main Stage

The news came out of the show’s Main Stage panel at the Jacob Javits Center, moderated by TV Guide Magazine’s Damian Holbrook. Daddario was joined by co-stars Harry Hamlin, Tongayi Chirisa and new cast members Betsy Brandt and Eliza Scanlen, along with co-showrunners Esta Spalding and Thomas Schnauz and executive producer Mark Johnson. Alongside the retitle and the date, the panel premiered a teaser trailer and a first clip from the season — and Rotten Tomatoes’ own listing for the teaser carries the same December 30, 2026 air date and a one-line premise: a new fight begins in old Salem.

The December 30 slot is a statement in itself. It plants the premiere in the dead centre of the holiday viewing week, one day before New Year’s Eve, when broadcast schedules go quiet and a genre launch on AMC and AMC+ has the field largely to itself. It also caps a long public runway: AMC had already confirmed the Salem setting earlier, promising a deeper dive into the mythology of witchcraft, new spellbound families, and a story that folds in the historical happenings of the town of the witch trials. NYCC turned that promise into a title, a trailer and a date. Catch up on the rest of the convention-week announcements in our TV coverage and what to watch this week.

03 Salem: a new town with an old trap in it

The creative swing is the setting. Season 1 belonged to New Orleans and Season 2 ranged as far as Scotland; Salem Coven relocates the action to Massachusetts and reimagines the Salem witch trials with a twist: in this version, real witches were embedded in the town from the start. Panel reporting describes a Salem that lures and traps witches — a place that has been quietly collecting them since the trials — and Rowan, drawn there, would very much like to leave. Co-showrunner Esta Spalding told the New York Comic Con panel the season is “bigger and bolder and very Salem-centric.” Executive producer Mark Johnson, also speaking on the panel, explained the urge behind the move: the team wanted to shake the show up, and getting out of New Orleans and going to Salem felt like the right way to do it.

Rowan arrives changed. She comes into the season carrying the power Lasher gave her in Season 2, and the producers were explicit that the point of Salem is to let her be more commanding — a witch among witches at last, rather than a newcomer learning her own family’s rules. The season’s mythology widens accordingly: a new coven to confront, new spellbound families to meet, and a version of Salem’s history in which the accused were not simply innocent victims of a panic — some of them were exactly what the town feared, and their descendants never left.

04 The cast: returners, a body possessed, and a witch who doesn’t know

Daddario returns as Rowan, the neurosurgeon who learned she was heir to a dynasty of powerful witches. Hamlin is back as family patriarch Cortland Mayfair — with a complication panel reporting made much of: Julien Mayfair, played by Ted Levine, has taken full possession of Cortland’s body, which means Hamlin’s performance this season is, in a sense, a guest living in it. Chirisa returns as Ciprien Grieve, now leading the Talamasca’s New Orleans house while being drawn into Salem’s deeper mysteries, and Alyssa Jirrels is also among the returning cast.

The headline addition is Eliza Scanlen as Jessica, an original character: a witch who grew up in Salem, is far less knowledgeable than Rowan, and does not realise the town has her trapped — she just thinks it is where she lives. The dynamic is deliberate. Jessica gives Rowan someone to lead, teach and occasionally overrule, and gives Daddario a sparring partner who lets Rowan be the authority in the room for the first time. Betsy Brandt joins as series regular Katherine Mayfair, Michiel Huisman arrives as a new romantic interest carrying a hidden secret, and James Frain and Omar Maskati round out the new ensemble. Back home, the family Rowan left behind has not stopped scheming — and neither has Lasher’s legacy, which now runs through Rowan herself.

05 Off the books — and proud of it

The most consequential creative note from the panel is also the boldest. The series is adapted from Rice’s Lives of the Mayfair Witches trilogy, and Salem does appear in the books — but Spalding acknowledged the new season is not a faithful adaptation of a specific novel’s storyline. The season is inspired by the books, with original characters inspired by book characters, rather than built directly on the page. After two seasons that polarised Rice readers, the show is openly writing its own chapter — with a lighter touch promised alongside the scares: panel members described a season that is scary but also deliberately funnier, with the cast bringing more of their own personalities into it.

All of this sits inside AMC’s Immortal Universe, the shared Rice franchise that also includes The Vampire Lestat — and panel reporting confirmed the creative team is actively building connections across the franchise, including a Lestat-era thread woven into a Season 3 episode. With the Talamasca spin-off now cancelled, Salem Coven carries more of the universe’s weight than any Mayfair season before it. December 30 will show whether the boldest move in the show’s history — new town, new title, new story, same witch, considerably more powerful — is the one that finally casts the spell all the way.
