Starfleet Academy Season 2 Lands March 2027 — With Bill Nighy Aboard

The cadets' sophomore year now has a date, two major guest stars and one family reunion centuries in the making: Bill Nighy joins the final season as Nyk Ake, the estranged father of Holly Hunter's Captain Nahla Ake.

Graduation will have to wait, but not for long. At the Star Trek Universe panel at New York Comic Con, Paramount+ announced that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy returns for its second season in March 2027, BroadwayWorld reported — and the sophomore year arrives with reinforcements. Oscar nominee Bill Nighy and Rosemarie DeWitt join the cast as guest stars, in roles that put the families of the Academy's two most guarded characters on screen for the first time.

01 A father, centuries overdue

Nighy plays Nyk Ake, the estranged father of Captain Nahla Ake, the officer in charge of the Academy, played by Holly Hunter, TrekMovie reported. In the world of the show — set in the far future, long after the era of Star Trek: Discovery — Nahla is a half-Lanthanite, a species defined by extraordinarily long lives, which makes a father-daughter reunion a meeting across a span of time no ordinary family argument covers. Reports from the panel describe Nyk as full-blooded Lanthanite, and the first-look photos released at the convention show Nighy in conversation with Robert Picardo's Doctor — a meeting of two of the franchise's longest-lived figures. Nighy, known for Living and About Time, is the season's marquee guest signing, and his casting was the panel's headline reveal alongside the date.

DeWitt, of Untamed and The Staircase, plays Laytha Sadal, the First Lady of Betazed and the mother of cadet Tarima Sadal, played by Zoë Steiner, GeekTyrant reported. Betazed's telepathic culture has been part of Trek since The Next Generation, and a First Lady's visit to the Academy folds diplomacy directly into a cadet's family life — one of several ways the season turns the school into a pressure cooker of politics and parentage.

02 Double duty for Holly Hunter

The panel, moderated by Collider's Perri Nemiroff, brought Hunter on stage with cadets Sandro Rosta (Caleb Mir), Bella Shepard (Genesis Lythe) and Karim Diané (Jay-Den Kraag), plus Picardo and co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, BroadwayWorld reported. The cast also includes Kerrice Brooks and George Hawkins, with Tig Notaro and Oded Fehr returning from Discovery. One of the panel's surprise disclosures: Hunter also plays Nahla's twin sister this season, putting the captain face to face with a version of her own history just as her father re-enters her life.

Attendees also saw an exclusive clip from the season opener that Paramount+ has not released publicly: the cadets' first training away mission, interrupted by the arrival of a crashed pod carrying a mysterious new cadet named Keats. British actor Ruaridh Aldington joins as a series regular in the role — a young alien the cadets encounter on that away mission who, TrekCore reported, turns out to be a wanted man whose life is in danger once they bring him back to the Academy. The official season synopsis promises the cadets' second year aboard the USS Athena will test their ideals of leadership, friendship, romance and morality, through budding rivalries, shaky diplomatic negotiations and a fiercely competitive schoolwide tournament, per Paramount+'s logline reported by ScreenRant.

03 A final season, announced like a celebration

There is a bittersweet frame around all of this: Season 2 is the final season. Paramount+ and CBS Studios confirmed earlier this year that the series will end after its sophomore run, Radio Times reported, while praising the show's ambition and its place in expanding the Trek universe. That makes the March 2027 premiere a farewell tour as much as a launch — 10 episodes to close the Academy's story. The NYCC panel itself leaned celebratory: it sat inside a Star Trek 60th-anniversary presentation that also featured William Shatner in conversation with Ben Stiller, and the Academy cast's news was delivered as the franchise's near-term future, whatever comes after it. We cover the convention's full slate in the newsroom and keep every Trek premiere date in Coming Soon.

Knowing the end date while filming is a privilege few series get, and the shape of the season suggests the writers used it: parents arriving, a twin resurfacing, a wanted newcomer, a tournament. Those are closing-argument storylines, not placeholders. For viewers who found Season 1 divisive — and the show has been one of the franchise's most debated entries — the final season is a clean invitation: ten episodes, a defined ending, and a captain whose family history is finally part of the text. 04 What to watch for

Paramount+ has given the month — March 2027 — but not the day; expect the exact premiere date, and likely a public release of that away-mission footage, in the new year. Watch, too, for how much of the season Nighy actually occupies: guest-star billing can mean a single showcase episode or a recurring thread across the farewell run. Either way, the Academy doors close next spring. Starfleet Academy set out to ask what Starfleet means to the generation that inherits it at its most fragile moment; Season 2 is where it has to answer.
