NEW YORK
The Avatar franchise just doubled its timeline. At New York Comic Con on October 9, co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko announced Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos, a new animated prequel series for Paramount+ that follows Kuruk — the Water Tribe Avatar who lived three generations before Aang — as a rebellious teenager, Reuters reported. The reveal came during the panel for Avatar: Seven Havens, and together the two shows now bookend the franchise: one in a broken future, one in an untested past. We covered the Seven Havens side of that panel — the Books 3 and 4 renewal, announced the day Book 1 premiered — and this is the other half of the story.
01 The Avatar who broke the training manual
Every Avatar before him followed the same path: be identified, be taken to masters, master the elements in the prescribed order. Kuruk, per the official description carried by The Futon Critic, turns that down. The teenage Avatar instead chooses to learn water, earth, fire and air through globetrotting adventures of his own making — staying ahead of an angry teacher, rowdy pirates and chaotic spirits while helping the world in his own way. Attendees at the panel got a first look at Kuruk and at Nikik, the small animal companion who travels with him; follow-up reporting described Nikik as a koala-like creature, and Mac Observer described the companion as a koalaotter. Konietzko serves as showrunner, with Avatar Studios and Nickelodeon Animation Studios producing, The Futon Critic reported.
The tonal pitch is the real news. Panel reporting relayed by ComingSoon said Konietzko described Wave of Chaos as the franchise's first action-comedy — a deliberate swerve from the version of Kuruk that longtime fans know. In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Kuruk appears to Aang as a past life with a genuinely tragic story: a carefree young Avatar whose inattention to the spirit world cost him dearly, most famously in the loss of his fiancée Ummi to Koh, the face-stealing spirit. A teenage comedy about that same man is not a contradiction; it is the before picture. The show gets to play the high spirits of a kid who has not yet learned what the job costs — and the audience carries the knowledge of what is coming into every joke.

02 Why Kuruk, why now
Kuruk has always been one of the franchise's most sketched-in figures. He reigned in the generation before Kyoshi — which puts him three generations before Aang — and while the Kyoshi novels filled in her era in detail, Kuruk's own youth stayed mostly legend: a Northern Water Tribe prodigy, a brilliant waterbender, a man whose short life became a cautionary tale. A prequel series set in his teens lets Avatar Studios do for Kuruk what the novels did for Kyoshi, with one crucial difference in register: where Kyoshi's story is a revenge epic, Kuruk's is being built as a romp — pirate chases, spirit messes, a teacher one step behind.
The strategy underneath is the one Paramount+ has been building since DiMartino and Konietzko launched Avatar Studios with Nickelodeon in 2021: treat the Avatar cycle itself as the franchise engine. Each Avatar is a new era, a new tone and a new entry point, with no homework required. Seven Havens — whose premiere we covered in our Book 1 premiere story — pushes the cycle forward past Korra into a world that fears its Avatar. Wave of Chaos reaches backward to an age when the Avatar was still a celebrity teenager with everything to learn. Two shows, two directions, one mythology — and a release calendar that can alternate between them for years.
03 What we don't know yet
Plenty. Paramount+ has not announced a premiere date or a voice cast for Wave of Chaos, ComingSoon reported, and the panel's first-look material — which panel reports describe as including Kuruk waterbending and a view of the Northern Water Tribe's capital — has been shared as first-look images rather than a full trailer. The episode count is unannounced as well. That is normal for a series revealed at a convention panel alongside a renewal headline; the Kuruk announcement was the surprise, not the schedule.
What can be said is where it fits. The franchise's near-term calendar belongs to Seven Havens, whose Book 1 rollout continues on Fridays through October 30 and whose Books 2, 3 and 4 are now all commissioned. Wave of Chaos is the next installment after that in production terms — the second series out of Avatar Studios' expanded slate, arriving into a lineup we track in our TV coverage and Coming Soon. Animation timelines being what they are, patience is advised; the Avatar franchise has never hurried, and its gaps — a decade separated The Last Airbender from Korra — have historically been worth it.
04 What to watch for
The first casting announcement will tell us the show's register: who voices a teenage Kuruk sets the comedy's temperature. Beyond that, watch for how much of the known tragedy the series chooses to foreshadow — Koh's shadow hangs over any Kuruk story, and an action-comedy that knows when to go quiet could become the franchise's most interesting tonal experiment. For now, the Avatar universe has a future and a past in production at the same time, which is exactly where a story about reincarnation ought to live.
