In almost every league on earth, the conversation would already be over. On Wednesday night, in Inter Miami's 2–2 draw with FC Cincinnati, Lionel Messi was shown a yellow card in the 44th minute — his fifth of the MLS regular season. Five yellows is the textbook trigger for an automatic one-match ban, and Miami's next match is away to New England, the team directly above them. By the normal rules of football, Messi watches Sunday from the stands.
He doesn't. ESPN reported on Thursday that Messi is eligible for Sunday's game, and the reason is a rule MLS has carried since 2017 that almost nobody could name: the Good Behavior Incentive.
Here is how it works. A player automatically reduces his yellow-card accumulation total by one every time he appears in five consecutive matches without receiving a yellow card, a red card or any supplemental discipline — up to three times in a regular season. The booking stays on his record; what drops is the number that counts toward a suspension. It is not a Messi clause — it applies to every player in the league. Messi's five yellows arrived spread across the year, in matchweeks 8, 11, 20, 31 and 33, and between them he strung together clean runs of five and ten straight appearances that wiped two of the five off his total. His effective tally is three. Three does not trigger a ban.
Which is just as well, because Sunday is the game the Eastern Conference race has been narrowing toward. Nashville SC, runaway leaders on 71 points, clinched the first Supporters' Shield in club history last weekend, winning 2–0 at Montréal on goals from Sam Surridge and Hany Mukhtar. Behind them, New England sit second on 58 points and Miami third on 56, both already in the playoffs, two games each to play. With Nashville holding the Shield's Champions Cup place, second in the East now carries an automatic spot in next year's Concacaf Champions Cup — and on Sunday, second plays third, head-to-head.
The maths is brutally simple. If Miami win at Gillette, they jump to 59 points and take second into Decision Day. If New England win, they reach 61 and second is theirs — Miami could finish on 59 at most. A draw keeps New England in front and leaves Miami needing to beat Charlotte on Decision Day while hoping the Revolution slip at Orlando. Cristian “Kily” González said it after the Cincinnati draw: his team no longer has “any margin for error.”
New England will not roll over at home. The Revolution come in on four straight wins, the latest a 3–2 win over Red Bull New York on Wednesday (Dor Turgeman two, Dániel Gazdag the third). Miami bring the league's most dangerous attack: 75 goals, the most in MLS, and a captain who leads the league's scoring chart with 25 goals to go with 15 assists — and 40 goals in 45 games across all competitions in 2026, per ESPN's tracker. The caution for Miami is form: after three straight wins, they lost 2–0 at Red Bull New York, then needed a 90th-minute equaliser against Cincinnati just to stay within two.
The clubs drew 1–1 in Miami back in April. Only one of them can leave Gillette Stadium holding second place, and with Decision Day looming on November 7, when all 30 clubs play at once, there is no later. Kick-off is Sunday at 4:00 PM PT at Gillette Stadium, live on Apple TV. Five yellows said Messi should miss it. The rulebook says otherwise — and the rulebook might just have saved the best game of the weekend.
Inter Miami CF at New England Revolution — Sunday, Nov 1, 4:00 PM PT, Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Mass. Live on Apple TV. East standings: Nashville 71, New England 58, Inter Miami 56, Chicago 52, Charlotte 50.
