Thursday morning — here is the nightly news in one place. Pope Leo XIV rests in a Rome hospital after cancer surgery, September inflation set the 2027 Social Security raise at 3.6%, a judge kept three news outlets inside the White House, Formula 1 agreed to return to Africa, and NASA’s Perseverance rover set a driving record on Mars. This wrap runs down the nine biggest stories of Wednesday, October 14, tight.

1. Pope Leo Had a Good Night in Hospital After Cancer Surgery

The Vatican said on Thursday that Pope Leo XIV had a good night in hospital and ate breakfast, according to Reuters, as he recovers from Tuesday’s surgery at Rome’s Gemelli hospital. Doctors removed the lower lobe of his right lung during the roughly 90-minute operation, and tissue tests confirmed lung adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer. The Vatican has not yet disclosed the tumor’s size or whether the disease had spread to nearby lymph nodes, and the pope’s public schedule remains cancelled through October 20. Our full report on the surgery has what is known and what is still awaiting the pathology report.

2. Inflation Rose to 3.7% in September, and Social Security Checks Will Rise 3.6% in 2027

Consumer prices rose 3.7% over the year ending in September, up from 3.4% in August, with gasoline the biggest driver of the monthly increase, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics report released Wednesday. The same data set the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment for 2027 at 3.6%, which the Social Security Administration said works out to about $75 more a month for the average retired worker starting in January. USA Today reported that core inflation, excluding food and energy, was 2.6% for the year. Our September inflation report breaks down where prices moved most.

3. A Judge Kept CNN, MS NOW and Politico Inside the White House for Now

U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly issued a preliminary injunction that keeps White House access in place for journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico while their lawsuit proceeds, NPR and USA Today reported. Kelly, who first halted the ban with a temporary order in September, wrote that the outlets are likely to show the revocation of their press passes violated free-speech and due-process protections. The administration has appealed, and the White House said the outlets can report from outside the grounds, according to Reuters reporting carried by BusinessWorld.

4. Ukraine Says Starlink Limits Hit Drone Missions During a Second Heavy Night of Strikes

Ukraine accused SpaceX of limiting military Starlink terminals without warning, disrupting drone missions, Reuters reported on Wednesday, as Russian missile and drone attacks on energy sites left about 600,000 people without power. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the strikes a deliberate show of disrespect toward Washington’s announced energy ceasefire, and Ukrainian officials said they received no advance warning before the attacks for a second day. SpaceX did not immediately comment in Reuters’ reporting, and Poland’s foreign minister publicly pressed Elon Musk over the limits, noting Poland pays for Ukraine’s subscriptions.

5. Apple Intelligence Is Headed to China in December, While Apple and OpenAI Met in Court

Apple plans to bring Apple Intelligence to mainland China in December with iOS 27.3, Bloomberg reported via MacRumors, ending a delay that began when the features first launched elsewhere two years ago. The China version will be built with local partners Alibaba and Baidu, will include government-mandated guardrails, and will leave out the revamped Siri, image-generation tools and some writing features at launch. The same day, Apple and OpenAI were in federal court for the first major hearing in Apple’s trade-secret lawsuit, PYMNTS reported, with each side accusing the other’s former employees of mishandling confidential product information.

6. Perseverance Has Now Driven Farther on Mars Than Any Vehicle on Another World

NASA’s Perseverance rover reached 28.1 miles (45.2 kilometers) on Mars, passing the previous off-world driving record held by the Opportunity rover, Reuters and USA Today reported. Perseverance set the mark on October 11, on its 2,006th Martian day, while traveling toward an area called Idubi near the western rim of Jezero Crater, where scientists hope to find traces of ancient hydrothermal systems. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory said the rover’s systems remain in excellent shape and could operate well into the 2030s, with most of its driving done by its AutoNav self-driving system.

7. Formula 1 Will Return to Africa With a 10-Year Rwanda Deal

Formula 1 announced a ten-year agreement to stage an African Grand Prix in Rwanda in the early 2030s, Reuters reported, returning the championship to Africa for the first time since the 1993 South African Grand Prix. The race will run on a new purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, about 40 kilometers south of Kigali near the new international airport, once the track is completed to FIA Grade 1 standards. F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali said the deal will put the championship on every inhabited continent.

8. In Las Vegas, Paul Kim Was Sentenced to Five Years for the Tesla Firebombing

A Las Vegas story with national reach closed a chapter Wednesday: Paul Hyon Kim was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison for the March 2025 arson at a Tesla Collision Center, after prosecutors had asked for 240 months. The case drew wide attention at the time as attacks on Tesla properties made headlines across the country. Our sentencing report has the full case history and what was said in court.

9. Music Day: McCartney Talks Beatles Films, and the Music Tourism Act Becomes Law

Paul McCartney discussed Sam Mendes’ four-film Beatles project in a new interview, USA Today reported, including a light complaint about the height of the actor playing him — a detail he said Mendes assured him will not show on screen. The four films, each centered on one Beatle, are scheduled for April 2028. In Washington, President Trump signed the American Music Tourism Act into law on Wednesday, Billboard reported via GetUrTix; the bipartisan bill, sponsored by Sens. Marsha Blackburn and John Hickenlooper, directs the Commerce Department to build a plan to grow music tourism in the United States.

That is Wednesday in full — a pope resting in Rome, a benefit increase set for January, and a record that now stands at 28.1 miles on Mars. On the sports side, the Brewers can finish the Dodgers in NLCS Game 4 on Thursday — the sports desk has the full night covered. Thursday brings the next Vatican update and Game 4 at Dodger Stadium. We will be here for all of it.
