By the numbers
CORVALLIS, Ore.
One day, somebody is going to game-plan for Jesse Legree. They're going to double him, bracket him, assign a safety to his hip pocket for 60 minutes. Saturday was not that day, and San Diego State was not that team.
The Oregon State freshman caught 10 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns in the Beavers' 66-14 demolition of the Aztecs at Reser Stadium — and in doing so, he did something no Beaver had ever done. Legree is now the first player in Oregon State history with six straight 100-yard receiving games, breaking the record of five he had shared with Mike Hass (2005) and Brandin Cooks (2013). Hass didn't do it. Cooks didn't do it. Chad Johnson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Markus Wheaton, Isaiah Hodgins — none of them did it. A true freshman from Baltimore did it in his sixth college game.
He did it with style, too. The Aztecs somehow "held" Legree to 89 yards and a touchdown on eight catches in the first half, then forgot to cover him after halftime. On Oregon State's first snap of the second half, Braden Atkinson rolled right, stepped up and launched it deep; Legree shook free of his defender and raced untouched for a 71-yard touchdown that made it 45-7. That one pushed him over 100 for the day and past Hass and Cooks in the record book. Two series later, Atkinson found him wide open on a slant up the middle for 31 yards and his third score — the second straight week he's had three touchdown catches. After the third one, Legree struck the Heisman pose. He didn't say it was coming. He didn't have to.
"I'm making history every week," Legree told reporters after the game. "You aren't seeing any freshman do this."

He's not wrong. The 10 catches were a career high. The three touchdowns give him 12 on the season — tied with James Newson (2002) for third on Oregon State's single-season list — and he's got 932 receiving yards through six games. Only Cooks (16 in his Biletnikoff season of 2013) and Hodgins (13 in 2019) have more receiving touchdowns in a Beaver season. And Legree is leading the FBS in receiving yards and touchdowns while he's at it.
Atkinson deserves his own paragraph, because the sophomore quarterback is putting together a season for the ages. He completed 29 of 38 for 409 yards and five touchdowns before giving way in the third quarter. It was his sixth straight 300-yard game — one short of Sean Mannion's school-record seven in 2013 — and his second straight 400-yard game, something no Beaver had done since Mannion that same season. His 21 touchdown passes tie Sean Canfield (2009) and DJ Uiagalelei (2023) for sixth on the program's single-season list, and he went over 2,000 yards for the season in the first quarter. Oregon State scored touchdowns on each of its first five possessions: the opener went 75 yards in 11 plays and ended with the delightfully odd sight of Atkinson finding fellow quarterback Maalik Murphy for a 2-yard touchdown. AJ Newberry followed with a 27-yard scoring run, and Legree's 11-yard grab on the first play of the second quarter made it 21-0 before the Aztecs ever had a prayer.
The 66 points were the most by Oregon State since a 68-point night against Montana State in 2022, and the 52-point margin was the largest since a 77-3 win over Nicholls State in 2012. It's the Beavers' fourth straight win — the first time they've won four in a row since closing the 2022 season — and their sixth straight over the Aztecs. At 4-2 and 2-0 in the Pac-12, this team is very much alive in October.

The other side of this one is ugly. San Diego State trailed 52-7 when Jayden Denegal was pulled in the third quarter, and what replaced him wasn't better. Denegal completed just 5-of-15 passes for 78 yards; redshirt freshman Draiden Trudeau came in and promptly threw an interception — Jabari Odoemenem picked him off near midfield — that set up fullback Jake Reichle punching in Oregon State's eighth touchdown of the day. Head coach Sean Lewis hinted at changes afterward, and a quarterback controversy may be brewing in San Diego. The Aztecs were outgained 651-147, went without a first down on seven different drives, and the 66 points are the most they've allowed since 2008.
There were small Aztec bright spots, for the record. Jacob Bostick caught an 11-yard touchdown, and Jaylon Hawkins returned a kickoff 97 yards for his second return score in as many weeks — that one set a new program single-season record for kick-return touchdowns and tied Ray Peterson's career mark from 1992-95. But when your season highlight reel needs kick returns to fill the time, the scoreboard is telling you the real story.

The mop-up was its own little show. Murphy — who caught the game's first touchdown — then played quarterback for two drives, going a perfect 8-for-8 including a touchdown pass to Prineville native Eddie Freauff, who fell to his knees in celebration. Western Michigan transfer Brady Jones got the last drive and threw one deep ball that fell incomplete. Oregon State finished with 462 passing yards and six passing scores. San Diego State's defense will see this film in their nightmares.
It's worth zooming out on the Pac-12 for a second. Georgia survived in Tuscaloosa earlier in the day, Ohio State made its statement against Notre Dame — but the most quietly important result of the night might be this one. Oregon State is 4-2 with a freshman who leads the country in receiving yards and touchdowns and a quarterback one 300-yard game from a school record. Nobody in August had Oregon State pegged as the most fun offense in the West. Everyone's watching now.
