The short version
Las Vegas Raiders (3-1) at New England Patriots (2-2) — Sunday, October 11, Gillette Stadium, Foxborough. Kickoff 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT on CBS, per the Raiders' official game preview.
The Raiders are one of two NFL teams (with Detroit) to score 26+ in every game this season — the first Raiders team to do it in four straight since 2002. Kirk Cousins threw for 365 yards and 2 TDs in the Week 4 loss to Kansas City.
Drake Maye torched Buffalo for 269 yards, 3 TDs and 54 rushing yards — his 2nd career game with 3+ pass TDs and 50+ rush yards, tying Steve Grogan's franchise mark (USA Today). He also leads the league with 5 fumbles (3 recovered).
Reference market price: Patriots -3.5 (betting.net, youwager.lv) — reference only, not verified offers and not Previously's pick. The Raiders are 4-0 against the spread this season.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass.
The most surprising team in the NFL is about to take its weirdest test yet. The Las Vegas Raiders are 3-1. They have scored at least 26 points in every single game — something no Raiders team had done in four straight weeks since the Super Bowl season of 2002, per the team's official preview — and now they get on a plane to New England, where a Patriots team that just knocked off the previously-unbeaten Bills is waiting, and the whole thing kicks off at 10 o'clock in the morning, body-clock time. Quietly, this is one of the best games of the Week 5 slate.
Start with the Raiders, because nothing about them is supposed to be working. They lost 30-27 to Kansas City at home in Week 4 — their first loss of the season — and the offense still didn't blink. Kirk Cousins threw for 365 yards and two touchdowns, finding Ian Thomas for a 27-yarder and Brock Bowers for a 20-yard score, per the team's game preview. Ashton Jeanty piled up 126 yards from scrimmage. Matt Gay drilled four field goals. That's the profile through four weeks: one of only two teams in the league (Detroit is the other) to crack 26 in every game, and a quarterback playing the cleanest, most efficient ball of his life. If you missed the full breakdown of how Cousins turned this team into a surprise, that's the companion piece — this is the road test of everything it claimed.

And the defense is the part nobody saw coming. New England head coach Mike Vrabel put it bluntly when asked about the Raiders: "The defense is very opportunistic. They hunt the football and they forced 10 fumbles, which is very impressive as a team." (via USA Today). Ten forced fumbles in four games is a number that warps game plans — every ball carrier in a white jersey (silver, technically) has to play with one eye on the second man through. The Raiders aren't just outscoring people; they're hunting.
Then there's Drake Maye, who is either the problem or the solution depending on which quarter you watch. The Patriots' 29-26 win at Buffalo in Week 4 was the best and most Maye game of his season: 22 of 37 for 269 yards and three touchdowns with one interception, plus eight carries for 54 yards — earning him AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors, per USA Today. The go-ahead score was a 23-yard touchdown to Efton Chism with 1:42 left, the kind of red-zone moment that had gone wrong for him twice already this season. In Week 1, a Super Bowl rematch against Seattle, he threw a game-ending interception; on the road in Jacksonville, Travis Hunter picked him off in the end zone with a minute left in the half of a game the Patriots lost 35-6. Against Buffalo, it finally clicked.

But the stat line underneath the breakout is a rollercoaster, and Maye knows it. USA Today reports he leads the NFL with five fumbles (recovering three), carries a 4:7 touchdown-to-interception ratio into Sunday, and is completing 62.4% of his passes — all below the standard he set during last year's runner-up MVP campaign and the Patriots' run to Super Bowl 60. "It's riding the rollercoaster," Maye said. His signature game Sunday — the 269/3/54 line — was his second career game with three-plus passing touchdowns and 50-plus rushing yards, tying Steve Grogan's franchise record. Which Maye shows up against a defense that has forced 10 fumbles is the entire game.
Raiders offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak isn't treating him like a project. "He's a player that we have a ton of respect for. Very dangerous with his legs, with his ability to throw the ball down the field." (via the Raiders' official preview). Vrabel, for his part, commended Maye's decision-making and toughness after the Bills win — the kind of public vote of confidence coaches give a young quarterback right before asking him to do it again against a better defense.

So here's the shape of it. The reference market price has the Patriots favored by 3.5 at home (via betting.net and youwager.lv — listed as reference market prices, not verified offers, and definitely not Previously's pick), which is the market saying Buffalo win + home field + 10 a.m. PT body clock outweighs the better record. And to be fair, the body-clock thing is real: West Coast teams playing the early window in the East have a long, documented history of sleepy first halves, and a 10 a.m. Pacific kick is the maximum-strength version of it. The Raiders' counterargument is that they've covered all four games this season (4-0 ATS, per betting.net) and that an offense scoring 26-plus every week doesn't need a fast start to stay in it.
The real matchup, though, is simpler than all of that. It's the league's most efficient surprise offense against the league's most volatile young star — and it's a ball-hawking defense that has forced 10 fumbles against the quarterback who has fumbled five times in four weeks. If Maye protects the ball, the Patriots' home-field edge and the early kick probably carry them. If he doesn't, the team that hasn't been held under 26 all year will make New England pay for every single one. Buckle up for the 1 p.m. ET window.
