'Slow Horses' Season 8 Is Already Filming — and the Show Is Catching Up to the Books

Slow Horses Season 8 is filming now, Christopher Chung has confirmed, after Apple renewed the series on September 15 — a day before Season 6 premiered. The six-episode season adapts Mick Herron's Clown Town, the ninth Slough House novel, as the show reaches the end of its source material.

Most prestige dramas make audiences wait two years between seasons and call it anticipation. Slow Horses is currently airing its sixth season, has its seventh already in the can, and — as of late September — has cameras rolling on its eighth. Christopher Chung, who plays the gloriously insufferable tech specialist Roddy Ho, confirmed in an interview that production on Season 8 has begun, an update that moves Apple TV’s spy series from “renewed early” to something rarer: a show running two full seasons ahead of its own broadcast.

02 The renewal that landed before the premiere

Start with the timing, because the timing is the flex. Apple announced the Season 8 renewal on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 — one day before Season 6 premiered on September 16. Season 7 was already confirmed and filmed at that point, which makes this the earliest the series has ever been greenlit relative to its current run. The announcement came the morning after director Saul Metzstein won the Emmy for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series for the Season 5 finale, adding a fresh trophy to a cabinet that, by current counts, holds three Emmy Awards and five BAFTA Television Awards for the series.

Season 8 will run six episodes and adapt Clown Town, the ninth novel in Mick Herron’s Slough House series. Ben Vanstone will adapt the book and serve as executive producer, and Adam Randall returns to direct all six episodes, as he did for Season 4 and the current sixth run. Gary Oldman returns as Jackson Lamb — flatulent, brilliant, and still the gravitational centre of the whole enterprise — and the official synopsis points to a major confrontation between Lamb and Diana Taverner, the intelligence chief played by Kristin Scott Thomas. On the show’s established annual rhythm, Season 8 would be expected around 2028, though Apple has announced no date. Follow the current season week to week in our TV coverage.

03 A pipeline most shows would envy

To see how unusual this is, lay the seasons end to end. Season 6, now airing weekly with its finale due October 21, does something the series has never done before: it compresses two novels, Joe Country and Slough House, into a single six-episode season — with Lenny Rush joining the cast. Season 7, adapting the eighth novel, Bad Actors, finished filming before Season 6 even premiered and is expected in 2027. Season 8, adapting Clown Town, is now in production. In other words, while viewers are still mid-argument about Season 6’s twists, the production has already banked the next season and is shooting the one after that.

That pace is a deliberate house style. The series is produced in overlapping blocks, scripts are commissioned well ahead, and Oldman has been a vocal advocate for keeping the machine moving rather than letting momentum die in multi-year gaps. Chung’s update — given to ScreenRant and picked up across the trade and fan press in late September and early October — is valuable precisely because it is unglamorous: not a teaser, not a poster, just a working actor confirming that the work is, in fact, happening. “We’re in production for season 8 now,” he said, noting that Season 7 is finished and that nobody tells him what happens after that. It is a production confirmation, not a finale announcement, and it should be read as exactly that.

04 The catch: the show is catching up to the books

Here is the angle that makes Season 8 more than a routine renewal story. Herron’s Slough House series currently stands at nine novels. Season 6’s decision to fuse two books into one season doubled the burn rate, Season 7 takes the eighth, and Season 8 takes the ninth — which means that when Clown Town wraps, the adaptation will have used the available numbered source material. A television show that began as a faithful, book-per-season adaptation is now arriving at the edge of its own library.

That has naturally fuelled speculation that Season 8 could be the end. The honest answer, on current evidence, is that nobody has said so. Apple has not announced a ninth season, but it has not labelled the eighth a final season either — a distinction streamers usually make loudly when it is true, because final seasons are marketing assets. Herron has indicated that more Slough House books are to come, and further material has been reported as in the works without a release date. Chung, for his part, joked that he needs to message Herron about how the next book is coming along, because he does not want his job to finish. The cast’s incentives and the author’s pen are, for once, pointed in exactly the same direction. Readers weighing the week’s other big Apple bet can compare it with the Imperfect Women Season 2 renewal, another case of the streamer extending a show beyond its original plan.

05 What it means for viewers right now

Practically, the news changes nothing about this autumn — and everything about the show’s future. Season 6 still has episodes to run, including the October 21 finale, and Season 7 is the next confirmed stop in 2027. What the filming start guarantees is continuity: no long silence while contracts are renegotiated, no recasting scramble, no momentum-killing hiatus of the kind that has thinned out so many streaming dramas. Slough House’s disgraced spies will keep reporting for duty on something close to an annual clock, under the worst boss in British intelligence, for at least two more seasons beyond the one on screen today.

The end-of-the-books question will not go away, and it should not — it is the most interesting creative problem the series has ever faced, bigger than any single villain Herron has put in Lamb’s path. But it is a problem for 2028. For now, the headline is the one Chung delivered: the cameras are rolling, the pipeline is full, and the slowest horses in MI5 remain, improbably, the fastest production in prestige TV.
