LOS ANGELES
Reality television rarely gets to plan this far ahead. On September 16, Peacock ordered three additional seasons of The Traitors — Seasons 6, 7 and 8 — locking its Emmy-winning murder-mystery competition into the schedule well beyond the Season 5 premiere already slated for 2027, TV Series Finale reported. Alan Cumming will return as host, and the announcement landed in the afterglow of the biggest awards night the genre has ever produced.
01 Seven Emmys changed the math
The timing was not subtle. Peacock's most recent season of The Traitors won seven Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Reality Competition Program, and the streamer says that haul is the most ever collected by a competition series in a single year, ComingSoon reported. Cumming personally took home Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program for the third consecutive year. The remaining wins covered directing, production design, cinematography, costumes and picture editing for a structured reality program — a sweep that touched nearly every craft category the show competes in. When a series wins that broadly, a one-season renewal starts to look timid. Peacock skipped the timid option.
The audience numbers pointed the same way. The most recent season was the show's biggest yet: viewership rose 72 percent over the prior season, and the run accumulated 8.1 billion minutes viewed from its January 8 premiere onward, according to Peacock and Nielsen figures reported by ComingSoon and TV Series Finale. The show ranked as the second-most-watched streaming original reality series of 2026 to date by minutes viewed. For a format built on weekly water-cooler suspicion — who is lying, who got murdered overnight, who melted down at the round table — those are the kind of numbers that justify signing the castle lease for years at a time.
02 What is already on the calendar
The three-season order sits on top of a pipeline that was already full. Season 5, the next celebrity edition, premieres in 2027, with Cumming returning as host and executive producer and a fresh group of famous faces heading to Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands, ComingSoon reported. Peacock recently unveiled that season's 23 celebrity players, a cast spanning film, comedy and reality television. Because Seasons 6, 7 and 8 are now ordered behind it, the production — from Studio Lambert, the company behind the format's international versions — can cast and design seasons as a continuing operation rather than a yearly cliffhanger of its own.
And the flagship is no longer the only version on American television. The Traitors: New Blood, a civilian edition of the format, premiered Thursday, September 17 on NBC with a two-hour launch, Bleeding Cool reported, followed by a two-episode event on September 24. Its 22 players are everyday Americans chosen from a nationwide search that drew more than 60,000 applicants, competing in the same Scottish Highlands setting for a prize fund worth up to $250,000. Episodes air Thursdays on NBC and stream the next day on Peacock. The original U.S. series actually began with a mixed cast of celebrities and civilians in its first season before leaning fully into famous players; New Blood restores the civilian game as its own series rather than a casting experiment. 03 Why streamers lock formats in early
A three-season order is as much a business story as a television one. Unscripted formats live and die on momentum: catch a show a year late and the cultural conversation has moved on. By ordering through Season 8 in a single stroke, Peacock protects the two assets that make The Traitors work — Cumming's availability and the show's place in the winter television calendar — while the Emmy wins are still fresh in voters' and viewers' minds. It also gives the streamer a reliable anchor franchise at a moment when reality hits are scarce enough that networks build entire quarters around them, a pattern we track across our browse pages and the wider newsroom.
There is a quieter benefit, too. Long-range orders let a competition show evolve deliberately. The U.S. version has already shifted its casting philosophy once and spun off a second edition; with runway through Season 8, its producers can pace twists, returning-player ideas and format experiments across years instead of front-loading every idea into a season that might be its last. Rival streamers have spent the past few years learning that lesson the expensive way, cancelling buzzy reality shows just as their audiences compounded. Peacock is doing the opposite: compounding first.
04 What to watch for
Season 5 arrives in 2027 on Peacock, and its 23-player celebrity cast will set the tone for the run of seasons behind it. In the meantime, The Traitors: New Blood continues Thursdays on NBC, with episodes streaming next day on Peacock — the first real test of whether the format's tension survives without famous faces, played by people nobody can look up mid-season. If it does, expect the two editions to alternate through the year, turning a single January hit into a near-permanent presence. Either way, the Faithful and the Traitors are booked into the castle through Season 8. The only question left is who will be sitting at the round table when they get there.
