Switch 2 Gets 11 Games on October 22 Alone in a Stacked Week Ahead

Thursday is the pile-up: 11 games land on Nintendo Switch 2 in a single day, headlined by Final Fantasy Resonance — and Xbox and PlayStation are having almost as crowded a week.

Games · Release Week Ahead

Some release days are busy. Thursday, October 22 is a traffic jam. According to GameRant, 11 games are set to launch for the Nintendo Switch 2 on that single day — a number that would make a respectable full week for most platforms — as the Switch 2 heads into its second holiday season with its release calendar accelerating rather than settling down.

The context makes the pile-up less surprising. The Switch 2 is Nintendo's fastest-selling console, GameRant noted, a start powered by its software: Mario Kart World was a launch title, and the critically acclaimed Donkey Kong Bananza followed a little over a month later. New releases have arrived at a steady clip since, GameRant reported — and October 22 is the day that steady clip turns into a flood.

The October 22 eleven

The headline name is Final Fantasy Resonance. Around it, GameRant's list of the day's Switch 2 launches includes Cult of the Lamb, Hitman: Absolution — Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, Azure Striker Gunvolt Trilogy Enhanced, Cotton Reboot!, My Friendly Neighborhood, HoloVillage: Our Cozy Days and Beyond the Dark: Nightwatch, among the 11 titles arriving that day.

Read the list by genre and the strategy is clear. There is a flagship JRPG, a first-party sports return in Switch Sports Resort, a cult-hit roguelite in Cult of the Lamb, a stealth classic in Hitman: Absolution, retro shooting in Cotton Reboot! and cozy life-sim relief in HoloVillage. No single audience owns the day — which is precisely how a console with the Switch 2's sales pace keeps every segment of its install base spending in the same week.

Final Fantasy Resonance, up close

The week's most substantial single release is Final Fantasy Resonance, out October 22. According to JRPG Pursuit, it is an HD-2D turn-based JRPG from Square Enix and LANCARSE Ltd. that reimagines the mobile RPG Final Fantasy Brave Exvius as a standalone single-player game, with an expanded job system and summons. That origin matters: Brave Exvius built a long-running story and cast inside a mobile format, and Resonance is the attempt to give that material the shape of a traditional console RPG — pixel-art characters in the HD-2D style, modern lighting and depth, and a structure built for one player from start to finish.

Players do not have to wait until Thursday to start. A demo is available now with save carry-over to the full game, per JRPG Pursuit — the increasingly standard Square Enix approach that lets the opening hours double as the sales pitch. The game launches across platforms the same day: Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, according to JRPG Pursuit. For Switch 2 owners, it is the rare case where the Nintendo version of a multiplatform JRPG is a day-one equal rather than a later port.

Xbox and PlayStation are stacked too

The pile-up is not a Nintendo-only story. The wider week of Oct. 19–23 brings more than 20 games to Xbox, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and Final Fantasy Resonance, according to Pure Xbox via GameFAQs. Push Square, via GameFAQs, counted more than 35 PS5 and PS Plus titles for Oct. 19–25, including Modern Warfare 4 — whose campaign is playable in early access — and BeamNG.drive. Three platforms, three crowded calendars, one week: this is the shape of the modern October, when publishers place their biggest bets in the last clear window before the holiday.

The week's most consequential business detail sits inside the Xbox list. Power Up Gaming reported that Modern Warfare 4 will not be on Game Pass at launch — the first time in years a Call of Duty title skips the service at launch. We attribute that claim clearly to Power Up Gaming's reporting; if it holds, it changes the week's math for Xbox players, who have grown used to treating the year's biggest shooter as a subscription download rather than a purchase decision.

The week also has a runway. Among the releases that just landed in the Oct. 15–21 window, Tech-Gaming's list counted Tales of Eternia Remastered at $29.99 and Castlevania: Belmont's Curse among the PS5 releases — two nostalgia-driven titles warming up the audience for the retro strands in Thursday's Switch 2 lineup, from Cotton Reboot! to the Gunvolt Trilogy.

How to survive Thursday

For Switch 2 owners, the practical advice is sequencing. Start the Final Fantasy Resonance demo this weekend — it is free, and progress carries over, so Thursday becomes a continuation rather than a cold start. Pick one of the day's smaller titles as the second purchase rather than three: Cult of the Lamb for run-based sessions, Switch Sports Resort if the console is shared with family, Hitman: Absolution if you want a proven campaign at what is likely a port's price. The eShop wish list, used honestly, is the difference between a great release day and an expensive one.

Eleven games in a day would have been a headline in any console generation. For the Switch 2, GameRant's count makes it something closer to a proof of concept: the fastest-selling Nintendo console in history now has a release calendar dense enough to match its hardware pace. Thursday will test wallets more than it tests the machine. Browse the full games lineup in our games section, and catch up on the week's other big games story, GTA VI still changing review copies.
