The Diplomat Season 4 Drops Thursday: All 8 Episodes Hit Netflix at Once

Keri Russell returns as U.S. ambassador Kate Wyler on Thursday, October 15, with all eight episodes of The Diplomat’s fourth season landing on Netflix at once — almost exactly a year after Season 3. Here’s where the show left off, who’s back, and what to know before you binge.

The Short Version

Put it in the calendar in pen: The Diplomat’s fourth season arrives on Netflix this Thursday, October 15, and all eight episodes drop at once. Netflix confirmed the release date, and Channel Canada’s weekly premiere listings locked The Diplomat into the Thursday, October 15 slot. The turnaround is almost suspiciously fast — Season 3 landed October 16, 2025, almost exactly a year earlier, a season-a-year pace that prestige streaming almost never pulls off.

That’s the whole plan: eight hour-long episodes, one Thursday, no weekly drip, no split-season games, no waiting on a part two. The full board resets before the weekend, and Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler is walking into the worst week of her career.

01 The drop: Thursday, all eight, all at once

Startefacts confirmed Netflix will release all eight hour-long episodes at once on October 15, and the streamer has shown no interest in the weekly-release experiments other platforms keep trying. For viewers, that means the standard Netflix global drop — episodes going live overnight, 12:01 a.m. Pacific — and then the clock starts on spoiler discipline.

The cadence is the real story of this show’s production. Startefacts laid out the timeline: Season 1 in April 2023, Season 2 in October 2024, Season 3 in October 2025, Season 4 in October 2026. Asked by Screen Rant how the team keeps pulling that off, creator Debora Cahn joked that her team simply doesn’t sleep — and pointed out that she used to make network shows with 25 episodes a year. Netflix’s confidence goes back further: Radio Times reported the streamer renewed the show back in May 2025, five months before Season 3 even debuted.

02 Where Season 3 left off

If you need a refresher before Thursday, here’s the short version of the long version. Season 3 ended with the Washington order blown up, as Startefacts summed it up: President Rayburn — played by Michael McKean — is dead, Grace Penn (Allison Janney) is in the Oval Office, her husband Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) is her vice president, and Kate is stuck in the middle of all of it.

Radio Times walked through the cliffhanger in detail: Kate realized that Hal and Grace had authorized an American submarine to take The Poseidon — a hugely powerful salted bomb — off a Russian submarine sitting in British waters, without telling British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear). Kate worked through the consequences on the spot. If the British find out, they’ll treat it as an act of war. If the Russians find out, they’ll likely assume the British took it — and could strike the United Kingdom in response.

And then the personal bomb went off. Kate began questioning whether she could trust her own husband in his new position, and she and First Gentleman Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford) started questioning just how close Hal and Grace really are — just as Kate was looking to rekindle her marriage to Hal. Florence Daily News put the season’s shape this way: with the presidency changing hands, Kate is navigating a brand-new political landscape while her marriage to Hal stays tangled in competing ambitions and behind-her-back maneuvering. Radio Times added the romantic wreckage: Kate is still caught between Hal and her boyfriend Callum, with her feelings for British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison unresolved — and Dennison now a married man.

03 What Season 4 is about

Netflix’s official synopsis for the new season, as reported by Radio Times, opens with a warning: two marriages threaten to eat each other alive. One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate brokered between the United States and the United Kingdom — and the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save. While Kate fights to stop the bleeding, President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon pushes the United States toward war. And Kate and Todd — at best, the synopsis says, an uneasy pair — unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home.

Creator Debora Cahn told Startefacts how she sees the four-character engine driving the season: “They’re two couples strapped together in one car on a crumbling roller coaster.” Kate versus Hal, Grace versus Todd, husband versus wife on both sides of the same war — that’s the season.

04 Who’s back — and who’s gone

The core four are locked in. Keri Russell returns as Kate Wyler, the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom at the center of the storm, and Rufus Sewell is back as Hal, now a heartbeat from the presidency and the co-architect of the season’s scheme. Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford — her The West Wing co-star — have both been promoted to series regulars, which Startefacts noted makes for a full-time West Wing reunion overseen by a former West Wing writer in Cahn. When the promotions were announced, Cahn said in a statement that the four of them together were an “insane bag of candy.” Nana Mensah, who plays White House chief of staff Billie Appiah, is a series regular now too.

Radio Times expects the rest of the central cast back as well, including Ato Essandoh as Stuart Hayford, Ali Ahn as Eidra Park, and Rory Kinnear as Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge — the man whose waters the whole conspiracy is floating in. Just Jared, meanwhile, reported some churn: two stars are exiting the show and one name was left off the Season 4 cast list. Season 4 isn’t just a continuation — it’s a reshuffled table.

And there’s the Emmy glow. Startefacts reported that Janney won the show’s first Emmy on September 14, 2026, and Netflix dropped the official trailer the next morning. If you haven’t seen it yet, our October 4 trailer breakdown has the details — this story picks up where that one left off.

05 A season a year — with Tuscany on the call sheet

Season 4 filmed between November 2025 and June 2026, and the production went bigger than London this time. Florence Daily News reported that filming took place in London, New York, and Tuscany, with the Tuscan leg supported by the Toscana Film Commission. The town of Lucca provided some of the most visible locations — crews worked in Piazza Napoleone, Porta San Pietro, Piazza San Frediano, Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, Piazza Guidiccioni, and Via Sant’Andrea — and for part of the shoot, the historic center was dressed as the setting for an informal G7 summit, complete with flags, official-looking signs, and black cars. Florence Daily News noted the set was convincing enough that passers-by thought an actual international meeting was underway. The production also shot at the Villa Reale di Marlia, a historic villa and park north of Lucca, and based itself at the Starhotels Teatro Luxury Apartments in Florence. Italy’s national locations database lists 33 days of production in Tuscany between May 13 and June 19, with a crew of more than 200 people.

Asked about a fifth season, Cahn told Screen Rant: “You can ask, but I can’t answer.” For now, the focus is Thursday. And if you need a warm-up act, Startefacts noted that all four seasons of Russell’s breakout series Felicity landed on Netflix on October 7 — part of a new Disney licensing deal, U.S. only — so you can watch the show that won her a Golden Globe before you watch the show that could win her an Emmy.

06 What to know before Thursday

The practical notes: all eight episodes, hour-long, streaming on Netflix starting Thursday, October 15 — Channel Canada’s listings put the premiere squarely on the Thursday grid, sharing the night with broadcast premieres of 9-1-1’s tenth season, 9-1-1: Nashville’s second, and Grey’s Anatomy’s twenty-third. It’s a genuinely stacked TV Thursday.

The strategic note is the binge model itself. Netflix isn’t dribbling this out weekly, which means the season’s twists — and a cliffhanger-driven show like this one will have them — are all fair game from Thursday morning. Mute the keywords, warn your group chat, and pace yourself: eight hours is a weekend, not an evening. For more on what’s worth your time this week across the dial, our TV desk has you covered.
