The Shaw brothers ride again. Jensen Ackles returns as Russell Shaw in Tracker Season 4, Episode 5, “Need to Know,” which CBS will air on Sunday, November 1 — and this time there is no guesswork involved for fans. CBS has confirmed the episode, released first-look photos, and published the official synopsis, so the only surprise left is the one the brothers are walking into.

02 The episode: two investigations, one kidnapping

Paraphrasing CBS’s official overview: after the wife and daughter of a military contractor are kidnapped, Colter Shaw — Justin Hartley’s reward-seeking tracker — takes the case and discovers that Russell is already investigating a related lead. Rather than working around each other, the brothers join forces, and the trail points toward a high-stakes cover-up rather than a straightforward ransom job. That last phrase does a lot of work. A cover-up means somebody with resources arranged the crime and is still arranging the story around it, which tends to put both Shaws in the category of problem to be managed.

The episode is written by Brian McCauley Johnson and Jai Franklin Sarki and directed by David M. Barrett, under showrunner Elwood Reid, with Hartley also serving as an executive producer. There is a casting treat buried in the guest list, too: Jeff Pierre guest stars, an actor Supernatural and Walker fans will recognise from the orbit of Ackles’ old co-star Jared Padalecki — a small, pleasing piece of television geometry that CBS’s photo gallery made sure to show off.

03 Why Russell episodes hit differently

Tracker is built around a loner. Colter’s whole method — drive in, read the ground, find the person, drive out — depends on him needing nobody. Russell breaks that machine in the most useful way possible, because he is the one character Colter cannot treat as a client, a suspect or a source. He is family, which on this show means he is also unfinished business. Across the first three seasons, Ackles’ appearances have been sparing — a handful of episodes — and each one has doubled as a chapter in the brothers’ long argument about their father, their childhood, and what each of them was told about the other.

That argument is not background decoration going into “Need to Know.” Reporting around the new season has Russell carrying a secret — connected to a file about what their father did, and to a shady job he has taken partly to keep Colter from finding out — while Colter, for his part, operates on the standing assumption that his brother is always keeping something from him. Hartley has described that lingering suspicion as the brothers’ normal state rather than a new development, which is exactly what makes a forced team-up episode such good fuel: the case demands trust at precisely the moment the family ledger says trust is the one currency in short supply. Keep up with the rest of the broadcast season in our TV coverage.

04 Hartley: at least one episode — and more pencilled in

Fans worried that November 1 is a one-and-done should take the longer view Hartley himself offered before the season. Speaking while this very episode was in production — Ackles, he joked, was about a hundred metres away from him at the time — Hartley said Ackles is in at least one episode this season and that the plan is to bring him back for a few more in the new year, schedules permitting. Reid has echoed that ambition across the summer’s press, teasing that Russell’s return could be bigger than a cameo and that the character may have a part to play in threads the season is still unspooling.

That scheduling dance is the reality of booking Ackles in 2026. He remains a major draw as Soldier Boy in The Boys universe, with the prequel spin-off Vought Rising set for Prime Video in 2027, while his other Prime Video vehicle, Countdown, ended after a single season. Tracker is therefore both his longest-running current broadcast home and the show that has to share him — which is why the series has learned to make every Russell appearance an event rather than a habit. The first-look photos CBS released lean into exactly that: the brothers side by side, working, with the easy physical shorthand of two people who grew up reading the same ground. 05 How to watch, and what to watch for

“Need to Know” airs Sunday, November 1 on CBS as Season 4, Episode 5. If you are catching up, the Russell essentials are his earlier appearances across Seasons 1 through 3 — the episodes that established the brothers’ rivalry, the shared survivalist upbringing under their father, and the questions about that upbringing that neither brother has yet answered honestly for the other. The kidnapping plot will resolve, as Tracker cases do. The cover-up framing suggests the episode’s real payload is what the brothers learn about whoever staged it — and what Russell decides, this time, to tell his brother while they are standing in the same room.

That decision is the show’s best ongoing story, and November 1 is its next chapter. Browse more returning favourites in the browse hub and follow the season as it unfolds in the news feed.
