VERZUZ Sets Carl Thomas vs. Case for October 22 in a Battle of Slow Jams

Announced October 15, the R&B matchup streams at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT on Apple Music, Complex and official VERZUZ channels, pitting Bad Boy's Carl Thomas against Def Soul's Case after August's Joe vs. Donell Jones.

VERZUZ is giving R&B its night again. On Thursday, October 15, the platform announced its next matchup: Carl Thomas versus Case, on Thursday, October 22, at 9 p.m. ET and 6 p.m. PT. The battle of slow jams and heartbreak anthems streams live on Apple Music, on Complex, and through VERZUZ's official channels. The official poster said it in one mashup line, preserved in the HipHopWired coverage: "I Wish You Never Teased Me" — Carl Thomas's signature "I Wish" folded straight into Case's breakout "Touch Me Tease Me."

The tagline is clever, but it also makes the matchup's logic plain. These are two singers whose biggest records came from the same radio era, whose catalogues have never really left R&B rotation, and whose styles are different enough that a song-for-song battle has somewhere to go. It follows August's VERZUZ between Joe and Donell Jones, continuing the platform's run of pairing veteran R&B voices rather than chasing a headline from another genre. Hot 97, HotNewHipHop, HipHopWired and DJ Aytiger all carried the same core announcement — date, time, streaming routes and the August predecessor — which is why Previously is treating those facts as settled and spending this preview where a preview should spend it: on the records each man can actually play.

Carl Thomas: the Bad Boy flagship

Carl Thomas was a flagship artist of Bad Boy Records, and his case rests heavily on one album done exceptionally well. His debut, Emotional, arrived in 2000 and went platinum. Its signature song, "I Wish," spent six weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's R&B chart — a figure reported consistently across Hot 97, HotNewHipHop and DJ Aytiger's announcement coverage. That staying power is the heart of his VERZUZ argument. "I Wish" is not a song R&B fans remember fondly in the abstract. It is a song they still know line by line: a man in love with someone who belongs to someone else, sung without melodrama and without letting himself off the hook.

Around that centrepiece, Carl Thomas has "Summer Rain" and the title track "Emotional," both named in the announcement coverage as defining records of his era, plus "Giving You All My Love," which HotNewHipHop included in its rundown of the album's weapons. His reputation, as more than one outlet put it in covering this matchup, was built on vulnerable, emotionally charged storytelling — polished, but with the ache left in. In a VERZUZ room, that matters. A catalogue battle rewards songs an audience can feel in sequence, and Carl Thomas's best work sustains one mood — longing, regret, devotion — at a very high level for a very long stretch. If the night becomes a contest of who can hold a room in that feeling longest, he is a hard man to beat.

He is also not arriving as a museum piece. HotNewHipHop reported that Carl Thomas returned to "Emotional" in 2025 with a remix, and DJ Aytiger noted he remains active on the R&B touring circuit. The Previously Music catalogue tells the same story in its own listings, where his recent work sits alongside Emotional, Let's Talk About It, So Much Better and Conquer. The audience on October 22 will be judging the classics, but the man singing behind them is still working.

Case: Def Soul, soundtracks and street-hop romance

Case built his catalogue from a different corner of the same era. A cornerstone of the Def Soul era, he broke out in 1996 with "Touch Me Tease Me," featuring Mary J. Blige and Foxy Brown — the collaboration that gives the VERZUZ poster its second half. East Point's announcement coverage and DJ Aytiger both place that record at the start of his story, and it is an ideal opener for his side of the battle: a hit that bridged traditional R&B singing and hip-hop culture from the beginning of his career, rather than borrowing that energy later.

His biggest solo record is "Missing You," which reached No. 1 on Billboard's R&B chart and No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, figures reported by Hot 97, HotNewHipHop and DJ Aytiger. That crossover peak gives Case something Carl Thomas's catalogue offers less of: a slow jam that was also a major pop-chart presence. Around it sit "Happily Ever After," a wedding staple in the truest sense, and "Faded Pictures," both named in every announcement rundown as expected selections. East Point described his catalogue as street-hop-infused romances and wedding-staple ballads, and that range is his strategic strength. He can move from a hip-hop collaboration to a ceremony standard to a solo chart-topper without leaving his own discography.

Case, too, is still releasing music. DJ Aytiger and HotNewHipHop both noted his song "I Can't Breathe," released earlier this year, and it leads the top tracks on his Previously Music page as well. Like his opponent, he comes into October 22 as a working artist with a classic catalogue, not as a tribute to himself.

Why this pairing works

The best VERZUZ matchups are arguments about an era, and this one argues a specific thesis: that turn-of-the-century R&B had more than one way to be great. Carl Thomas represents the Bad Boy model at its most soulful — one voice, one emotional register, executed at platinum level. Case represents the Def Soul model — an R&B singer comfortable inside hip-hop collaborations, film-soundtrack culture and pop crossover, whose ballads travelled to weddings and charts alike. Their commercial peaks overlap. Their catalogues do not feel interchangeable. Hot 97 made exactly that observation in its announcement, and it is the reason a 20-song-style catalogue battle between them can stay competitive deep into the night instead of being decided by one signature hit.

There is also the simple matter of the songs' afterlife. "I Wish," "Summer Rain," "Touch Me Tease Me," "Missing You," "Happily Ever After" and "Faded Pictures" are not records that need to be reintroduced to the audience VERZUZ is inviting. They need to be sequenced, answered and defended. That is what the format does best when the pairing is right, and the reaction coverage HipHopWired gathered around the announcement suggests R&B listeners understood the pairing immediately — the poster's mashup tagline alone told them which two catalogues, and which two feelings, were about to collide.

How to watch on October 22

The practical details are short, so there is no excuse to miss it. Carl Thomas versus Case takes place on Thursday, October 22, at 9 p.m. ET and 6 p.m. PT. It streams live on Apple Music, on Complex, and on VERZUZ's official channels. Set the time by your coast, pick a side if you have one — Team Carl Thomas for the Bad Boy heartbreak catalogue, Team Case for the Def Soul romances — or do what most R&B fans will honestly do: show up for both, argue every round, and leave with a playlist you have actually been carrying since 1996 and 2000. After Joe versus Donell Jones in August, VERZUZ is betting again that the slow jams can carry a night. On the evidence of these two catalogues, it is a good bet.
