AMC used New York Comic Con to unveil a teaser built as a tribute to Daryl and Carol's fifteen-year story — and to date the end: the fourth and final season arrives in February 2027.
Fifteen years is a long time to survive anything, let alone the apocalypse — and at NYCC, AMC turned the Daryl Dixon trailer debut into a farewell. The first trailer for the fourth and final season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is a tribute to Daryl and Carol, the longest-running partnership in the Walking Dead universe, and AMC confirmed the end arrives in February 2027 on AMC and AMC+. ComicBasics reported the teaser and the premiere window, and multiple panel recaps from the convention confirmed the same details.
A Teaser That Is Really a Tribute
The teaser runs about a minute and a half, and by all accounts from the panel coverage it is structured less like a plot preview than a tribute. It looks back across Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier's fifteen-year friendship — from the Georgia days of the original series, when Carol was a grieving, frightened woman who had lost her daughter Sophia and Daryl was a loner defined by his motorcycle and his crossbow, through everything the franchise has put them through since — and intercuts that history with new footage from the final season. The official framing, as reported from AMC's materials, is that their fight to find home reaches its last chapter, with every battle and sacrifice leading to this point.
That is the right register for this particular ending. Daryl Dixon the series began in France in 2023 as a solo vehicle for Norman Reedus; Melissa McBride's Carol joined in the second season, restoring the pairing that had anchored the original show's emotional core; the third season moved the pair to Spain. The final season, per AMC's synopsis as reported in the recaps, keeps them in Spain's ravaged badlands, holding onto hope and each other as uncertainty about their future grows. The whole arc of the spinoff, in other words, has been a homeward journey — and the teaser is selling the arrival, whatever form it takes.
The Panel and the People
The NYCC panel on October 9 featured Reedus and McBride alongside showrunner David Zabel and franchise chief content officer Scott M. Gimple, per the panel recaps. McBride gave the weekend its most-quoted line, telling the audience, in a widely reported remark, that the story gets to the end of Daryl and Carol. Careful reading matters here: that phrasing confirms the spinoff — and this chapter of their shared story — is concluding. It does not confirm either character's fate, and none of the panel reporting treats it as a spoiler. In a franchise that has repeatedly found new chapters for its survivors, Previously will take the ending at the level it was announced: this series, this journey, ends with Season 4.
The final season runs eight episodes and adds a significant new face: Jimmy Smits joins as Captain Alejandro Perkins, described in AMC's casting details as a former U.S. Navy officer and doctor who adapted to life after the outbreak. The returning and supporting cast includes Romain Levi, Eduardo Noriega, Óscar Jaenada, Candela Saitta and Hugo Arbues. Zabel continues as showrunner, with Gimple, Reedus, McBride, Greg Nicotero and Angela Kang among the executive producers, and production took place around Spain, including Madrid and Bilbao, per the panel reporting. AMC previously released a much shorter tease in September — reportedly a 21-second spot — before this fuller NYCC trailer.
Fifteen Years, by the Numbers
The scale of what is ending deserves a pause. Reedus has played Daryl since 2010 and McBride has played Carol for the same span; the original Walking Dead ran eleven seasons before ending in 2022, and AMC built an entire universe of spinoffs around its survivors rather than let the story close. Daryl and Carol are the last original-era leads still carrying a series as its co-headliners, which is why a teaser built from their shared history lands differently from ordinary franchise marketing: it is an advertisement that is also an archive.
AMC is programming the farewell accordingly. The original Walking Dead series arrives on AMC+ on January 7, 2027 — billed as the first time all eleven seasons sit together on the platform, as part of a Walking Dead Universe collection — giving viewers roughly a month of runway before the final Daryl Dixon episodes begin. The wider franchise, to be clear, is not ending: other spinoffs continue, and this announcement closes one series, not the universe. But the center holds only so long, and with February set, the countdown for the franchise's defining duo is real.
What Is Confirmed, What Is Not
Confirmed: fourth and final season; February 2027 premiere on AMC and AMC+; eight episodes; Spain setting; Reedus and McBride leading; Smits joining; Zabel showrunning. Not announced: an exact premiere date, episode titles, or any character's fate — and the teaser, by design, does not answer the home question it poses.
