Apple’s ‘Welcome Home’ Event Is Tuesday: Everything the Reports Say Is Coming

The October 13 event in New York is confirmed — but not a single product is. Here is what Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and the rumor mill expect: a smart home hub, a new Apple TV 4K, a refreshed HomePod mini, and Siri AI at the center of all of it.

Share

The Short Version

  • The event is real: Apple announced a product launch for Tuesday, October 13 — “Welcome home,” per marketing chief Greg Joswiak’s October 8 post — with media invited to Tribeca, New York, at 9:00 AM ET for hands-on time instead of a traditional keynote (MacRumors, Oct. 8).
  • The rumored star: per Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, an all-new smart home hub with a roughly 6-inch square display, Siri AI voice control, and facial and voice recognition for individual household profiles — with a rumored starting price around $350. Apple has confirmed none of this.
  • Also expected: a new Apple TV 4K (A19-class chip, Apple’s N1 networking chip, upgraded remote) and a refreshed HomePod mini (new colors, faster chip, Siri AI) — the mini’s first update since 2020 and the TV’s first since 2022. A higher-end follow-up device and a full-size HomePod refresh are reported to be further out.
  • Why it matters: this would be Apple’s first coordinated smart-home push — a category where Google’s Nest and Amazon’s Alexa have had the living room to themselves — and Siri AI is the reason the products exist, and the reason they are late.

The invitation is real; everything else is reported. Apple has confirmed it will hold a product launch on Tuesday, October 13 — “Welcome home. October 13,” marketing chief Greg Joswiak posted October 8 — with members of the media invited to Tribeca, New York, at 9:00 AM Eastern for hands-on time with whatever Apple unveils. It is not expected to be a traditional keynote. And Apple has confirmed not a single product.

So here is the state of play two days out, assembled from the reporting of Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, MacRumors and others: three rumored devices, one new assistant, and the biggest question Apple’s smart-home strategy has ever faced — does the world’s most valuable company finally have something worth putting on the kitchen counter?

The smart home hub: Apple’s first new product category in years

The expected centerpiece, per Gurman’s reporting, is an all-new smart home hub — a device described as a cross between an iPad and a HomePod, built to control smart home products, place FaceTime calls, play videos, show news and weather, and keep the family calendar straight. The rumored specs, as compiled by MacRumors: a square 6-inch display, voice as the primary interface through the new Siri AI, and a camera plus presence sensor that can detect who is in the room and show a customized interface with widgets and apps. Facial and voice recognition would bring up individual household profiles, with a guest mode that hides personal information from visitors.

Two versions are rumored: a wall-mountable model and a tabletop version with a half-dome speaker base deliberately reminiscent of the iMac G4. The software reportedly blends customizable clock and photo displays with Apple Watch-style app icons and iPad-like layouts, with apps including FaceTime, Music, Calendar and Notes. The rumored starting price is around $350 — though as one careful roundup noted, that figure comes from earlier Bloomberg reporting and should not be treated as a confirmed launch price until Tuesday.

Apple’s framing of this as a multi-user device is the detail to watch. Amazon’s Echo and Google’s Nest Hub already own the single-user countertop; a hub that knows who walked into the room and reshapes itself — your calendar, not your teenager’s — is the one idea in the rumor mill that the incumbents do not really do yet.

Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini: the overdue refreshes

The hub may be the star, but the other two rumored devices fill real gaps. The Apple TV 4K has not been updated since 2022, and the current box is not on the supported list for Siri AI — so a new model is how the assistant gets to the television. The rumored internals, per MacRumors citing Gurman: an A19 or A19 Pro chip, a RAM upgrade (reports point toward as much as 12GB, up from 8GB), Apple’s N1 wireless chip, and an upgraded Siri Remote, in the same outer design. The hardware should improve gaming performance and enable Apple Intelligence and the new Siri throughout tvOS.

The HomePod mini, meanwhile, has gone untouched since its 2020 debut — and Gurman reports it is finally getting new colors (green and pink have been mentioned), an N1 networking chip for improved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a faster S-series processor that will support Siri AI. A full-size HomePod update is expected eventually but reportedly is not part of this wave. An OLED iPad mini is also said to be in development and could make an appearance at the home event, though that remains the softest of the rumors.

What it means for Apple’s smart-home push

Strip out the gadget rumors and Tuesday is really about one thing: Apple finally contesting the smart home as a category, years after Google and Amazon divided it up. The Home app and HomeKit have been plumbing; this would be the fixtures. Three coordinated devices — hub, speaker, TV box — all running the same new Siri AI, would give Apple its first full-stack answer to “Alexa, turn off the lights.”

The prize: the living room. A coordinated three-device launch would be Apple’s first real attempt to own the smart home, not just the phone in your pocket. Photo: crhoy.com.

The delay is the context. These products were reportedly aimed at 2024, then slipped while the assistant matured — Siri AI is the reason they exist and the reason they are late. That makes Tuesday a test of the assistant as much as the hardware. We have tracked Apple’s AI build-up all month — from the rumor landscape ahead of the announcement to the first preview of the hub — and the throughline is the same: nobody doubts Apple can make beautiful hardware for the home. The doubt is whether Siri AI can carry a conversation, run a household, and earn a permanent spot on the counter. Amazon and Google did not win the smart home with hardware. They won it with an assistant people trust to get it right.

We will know Tuesday morning, 9:00 AM Eastern, from a hands-on room in Tribeca. As always with Apple rumors: everything above is reported, nothing is confirmed, and the only product Apple has actually announced is the event itself.
