Most very large yachts are slow by design. Size buys volume, volume buys comfort, and speed is traded away somewhere along the naval architect's desk. Azzam refused the trade. The brief, set by engineer Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi, who led the project, was a large yacht with a timeless design that could travel fast in warm and shallow waters. Everything unusual about her follows from those last two words.
Shallow comes first. Azzam draws just 4.3 metres — remarkably little for a yacht of 180.65 metres and 13,136 gross tons, with a beam of 20.8 metres. A conventional propeller wants depth beneath the hull that this draft does not give, so she runs on pump jets instead, driven by two gas turbines and two diesel engines combining for a reported 94,000 horsepower. The diesels handle economical cruising; bring the turbines in and a yacht the length of nearly two football fields goes past 30 knots. Boat International's directory lists her top speed at 33 knots.
The schedule was as aggressive as the engineering. Lürssen built her in less than three years from keel laying to delivery in 2013, following a year of engineering — a record pace for a yacht of this size, with Boat International putting the workforce at more than 4,000 people. She took the longest-yacht title from the 162.5-metre Eclipse at launch. A longer vessel, the research ship REV Ocean, appeared in 2019, but she is not a private yacht; among private motor yachts, Azzam's mark still stands.
For all the machinery, the exterior was asked to behave. Mario Pedol of Nauta Design drew long, calm lines, and she reads smaller than she is — at 180 metres, the compliment the design was after. Inside, Christophe Leoni worked in early-nineteenth-century Empire style. Her main salon runs 29 metres by 18, open-plan and pillar-free. She carries 36 guests, with a crew reported at up to 80.
One number this piece will not give you is a build price, because there isn't an honest one to give. Figures around $600 million circulate widely, but Lürssen has never published a cost and the estimates behind those figures are undocumented. What the yard has published — dimensions, propulsion, build time — is remarkable enough without borrowing a price tag.
Previously's Take
Azzam's lesson is that at this end of shipbuilding, luxury is an engineering argument. Anyone can order length. Asking for length, speed, and a shallow draft in the same hull — then delivering it in under three years — is the part money alone doesn't explain. Twelve years on, no longer private yacht has been built. The industry may be waiting for a brief as unreasonable as this one.
