NEWARK, Del. — Nick Minicucci returned, threw five touchdown passes, and Delaware beat Missouri State 61-38 on Tuesday night at Delaware Stadium. The Blue Hens got the win, the spark and their quarterback back all at once, and the result was the wildest Conference USA game the league has seen in nearly a decade.

Delaware piled up 37 points in the second half after trailing at halftime, never punted on the night, and closed the game on a 30-0 run after the lead had already changed hands six times. According to Missouri State athletics, the 99 combined points made it the highest-scoring Conference USA game since 2017.

Minicucci, back in the lineup after missing two games with a knee injury, completed 20 of 29 passes for 225 yards and a career-high five touchdown passes, tying the Delaware single-game record, according to Delaware Online. His teammates made sure the comeback stuck, but it was Minicucci's go-ahead throw in the third quarter that flipped the night for good.

A game that would not sit still

Missouri State led 28-24 at halftime, and nothing about the first half suggested either defense was about to take control. The Bears struck early, Delaware answered, and the lead kept trading hands — six lead changes in all — as both offenses moved the ball at will in front of a crowd of 14,214.

The decisive swing came midway through the third quarter. With Delaware trailing 35-31, Minicucci found tight end Elijah Sessoms for a 4-yard touchdown pass with 7:50 left in the third quarter, as reported by Delaware Online, putting the Blue Hens in front 38-35. It was the last lead change of the night. Delaware never trailed again, and what followed was an avalanche: 30 unanswered points to close the game, turning a one-score fight into a 23-point rout.

Delaware scored 21 points in the third quarter and 16 more in the fourth. Just as telling was what never happened: the Blue Hens never punted, a detail noted by the Springfield News-Leader, meaning every Delaware possession ended in points, a turnover, or the end of a half. For an offense that had spent two weeks without its starting quarterback, it was a complete performance.

Silver and the ground game kept the pressure on

Minicucci did not do it alone. Running back Jo Silver carried 13 times for 101 yards, his fourth career 100-yard rushing game, giving Delaware the balance that kept Missouri State's defense from sitting on the pass. Delaware outgained Missouri State 482-431 in total offense, and the second-half surge was built as much on sustained drives as on quick strikes.

That balance mattered because Missouri State's offense was producing fireworks of its own. Quarterback Henry Belin IV completed 26 of 35 passes for 337 yards, and wide receiver Isaiah Myers delivered one of the great receiving nights in Bears history: 11 catches for 242 yards and two touchdowns. Per Missouri State, Myers' 242 yards are the second-highest single-game receiving total in school history, behind only Steven Rush's 249 yards in 2003. Running back Connor Lair added 96 all-purpose yards for the Bears.

For most of the night, that was enough. Missouri State led at the half and again in the third quarter, and its passing game repeatedly found Myers in space. The problem for the Bears was that the game demanded one more answer than they had.

The defense finally slammed the door

Delaware's closing 30-0 run was not only an offensive story. The Blue Hens' defense, gashed for 28 first-half points, produced the takeaways that turned a shootout into a runaway. Jawarren Corbin recorded a strip sack, with Brandon Graham returning the loose ball, and Delaware added interceptions by George Mullins and by Corbin himself.

Those stops changed the math of the fourth quarter. Instead of trading touchdowns, Missouri State was chasing the game against a defense that had finally found its footing, and Delaware's offense — still refusing to punt — kept adding points. A 38-35 deficit for Missouri State became 61-38 in what felt like a blink, and the Bears managed only 10 points after halftime against Delaware's 37.

What the win means

The victory is Delaware's first in Conference USA play. The Blue Hens improved to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference, snapping a three-game losing streak that had threatened to define their first CUSA campaign. Doing it with Minicucci back under center, in the program's highest-scoring conference game in years, gives head coach Ryan Carty's team a genuine turning-point candidate as the schedule turns toward a trip to Western Kentucky next Tuesday.

Missouri State fell to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in Conference USA. The Bears will take real encouragement from Belin and Myers — a 337-yard passing night and a near-record receiving performance are building blocks — but a second half in which they were outscored 37-10 will sting. In a league where both of these programs are still establishing themselves, Tuesday night was a reminder of how thin the margins are: one go-ahead touchdown pass in the third quarter separated a shootout from a statement.

Around the midweek slate

Tuesday's other finals involving Conference USA and Sun Belt teams were tighter, lower-scoring affairs. Middle Tennessee edged FIU 26-23, and Marshall held off South Alabama 20-13. Neither game came close to the fireworks in Newark, where 99 points, six lead changes and a 30-0 closing run made Delaware-Missouri State the midweek game of the week — and, by the league's own recent history, its highest-scoring night since 2017.

Follow the Blue Hens and the rest of the college football season on the Previously sports front.

For Delaware, the formula going forward is suddenly clear: a healthy Minicucci, Silver's balance on the ground, and a defense that saves its best for the second half. Reproduce even half of Tuesday's second half, and the Blue Hens' debut CUSA season looks very different than it did a week ago.
