Hulu Orders Durango to Series, With Cooper Hoffman in His First TV Role

Seven months after ordering the pilot, Hulu has committed to Eliza Clark's ski-town love story on the run — starring Cooper Hoffman and Kathryn Newton, with Merritt Wever as the detective hunting them.

Hulu has made it official: Durango is going to series. The streamer announced the order on October 15, seven months after it ordered the pilot in March — a deliberation period that, in the current television economy, usually ends in a pass. Instead, Eliza Clark's ski-town drama about two young people falling in love while running from nearly everyone they know has cleared the hardest hurdle in television. Follow the show's progress on Coming Soon and through the browse hub.

The casting is the headline. Cooper Hoffman plays Mikey, a ski-bum townie — and the role marks Hoffman's first television series, a notable step for one of the most closely watched young film actors of his generation. Opposite him, Kathryn Newton plays Bunny, a homeschooled runaway working as a waitress. Together, per the official logline, the two ride "an avalanche of bad decisions," falling in love while running from cops, criminals and Mikey's own wife, in pursuit of their own version of the American dream.

That wife is Irina, played by Abbey Lee — which means the pursuit is not abstract. And the law in this story has a face: Merritt Wever plays Detective Joni, who has spent twenty years policing a quiet resort town and now has the biggest case of her career dropped into her lap. Mason Gooding plays Detective Miles alongside her. It is a classic chase architecture — young lovers in flight, a dogged detective behind them — rebuilt inside a resort economy of seasonal workers, tourists and locals who all know each other's business. Clark's track record is the other half of Hulu's bet. She was the showrunner of Y: The Last Man and has credits on Animal Kingdom and The Killing — a résumé that runs from crime to character drama, which is precisely the blend Durango's logline promises. She created the series, writes it and executive produces. Jesse Peretz directed and executive produced the pilot, setting the visual template the series will now follow. Track Clark's earlier work through Previously's catalog.

The producing bench is deep. Durango is produced by 20th Television and Media Res, with American Light & Fixture also involved, and the executive producer roster includes Michael Ellenberg, Christina Malach, Chris Storer, Josh Senior and Tyson Bidner. Storer's presence — one of the most sought-after names in television after his recent run of hits — signals the level of ambition Hulu is attaching to a show that could have been positioned as a modest regional drama. It is not being positioned that way.

For Hoffman, the series order is a career marker. Film actors of his profile often treat television as a late-career move; taking a series lead this early says the material, not the medium, drove the decision. A first TV role also means a first long-form character — Mikey's arc across a season of bad decisions is a different instrument than a two-hour film performance, and the pilot evidently convinced Hulu the experiment works. Newton's parallel rise gives the show two leads whose combined audience skews young, exactly the demographic a streamer chases. See related premieres on the release calendar.

The seven-month gap between pilot and series order is worth reading correctly. Hulu ordered several high-profile pilots this cycle and could only advance some; Durango's survival through that winnowing, with its cast intact, is itself a vote of confidence. Series orders announced this late in the year typically target production in the new year, positioning Durango as a late-2026 or 2027 premiere — Hulu has announced neither a start date nor an episode count yet. The Live TV guide will carry it when a window is set.

The show also lands in a strong week for the TV desk: Apple renewed Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed for a second season, and Prime Video added Lauren Cohan and two more regulars to its horror thriller Stillwater — three separate streamers making three separate bets on character-driven series in the same news cycle. Durango's is arguably the riskiest and the most romantic: no franchise, no source material, just a town, a chase and two people making terrible choices beautifully. More television news is on the desk, and streaming picks round up where to watch the cast's earlier work.

Geography is the show's silent co-star. A ski town is a place built on transience — visitors arrive rich and leave quickly, seasonal workers cycle through, and locals measure time in winters. That churn gives two fugitives cover and gives a detective a town full of witnesses who may already be gone. Clark's earlier work has always been interested in closed systems and the people trapped inside them, and Durango's resort economy is exactly that: a beautiful closed system with chairlifts. It is the rare setting that serves the romance, the crime story and the class story all at once, and it photographs like a postcard doing it. Hulu, which has built much of its drama identity on distinctive American places, appears to know precisely what it bought.
