BIG TEN — BATTLE FOR THE HEARTLAND TROPHY

Heartland Horror Show — Iowa Blank Wisconsin 30–0

On Halloween at Kinnick Stadium, Iowa pitched its second straight shutout of Wisconsin in the 100th meeting of the rivalry — Hank Brown carved up the Badgers, the defense allowed nothing, and the Heartland Trophy never left Iowa City.

Wisconsin picked the wrong afternoon to walk into Kinnick Stadium. On Halloween, in the 100th meeting of one of the Big Ten's oldest rivalries, Iowa beat the Badgers 30–0 — ten points in each of the first three quarters, none allowed in any of them — and kept the Heartland Trophy in Iowa City for a fifth straight year.

It was a shutout with an exclamation point: the second straight year Iowa has blanked Wisconsin. The Badgers (5–3) managed 235 total yards, 52 on the ground, and nine first downs. They used two quarterbacks and scored with neither. The Hawkeyes (6–2) outgained them 362–235 and forced three turnovers, and the only suspense after halftime was whether the zero would survive. It did — twice by inches.

Hank Brown set the tone early and never let up. Iowa's quarterback completed 20 of 24 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions — 190 of those yards before halftime. He found tight end DJ Vonnahme for a four-yard score in the first quarter, then Tony Diaz from four yards in the second, and Iowa's ground game and Caden Buhr's right leg did the rest. Buhr hit field goals of 24 and 28 yards in the first half, then drilled a career-long 54-yarder in the third. Vonnahme added a two-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter to finish with a score receiving and a score rushing.

Wisconsin's best chance died at the goal line. Down 10–0 in the second quarter, the Badgers drove to the 1-yard line — and Iowa stopped them on fourth-and-goal. It was that kind of day: starter Colton Joseph was sacked on his first snap, finished 5-of-14 for 90 yards and was benched for true freshman Ryan Hopkins, who nearly broke the shutout himself in the final two minutes. Hopkins hit Tyrell Henry for 57 yards to the goal line with 1:55 left — and Henry fumbled into the end zone, forced by Zach Lutmer and recovered by Rashad Godfrey Jr. for a touchback. Iowa took over, knelt twice, and the zero was official.

The defense's signature moment came a few minutes earlier, when Jacob Wallace tipped a fourth-down pass into the air and caught it himself for an interception that summed up the afternoon: Wisconsin could not finish anything, and Iowa finished everything. Even Herky got into the spirit — the mascot worked the sideline dressed as Spider-Man while the crowd celebrated a Halloween blowout of a hated rival.

Five straight wins in the series now, by a combined 148–26, and back-to-back shutouts. Rivalries are supposed to be competitive. This one, lately, is just a yearly appointment in Iowa City — and on Saturday the Badgers never stood a chance.
