Season Over at 90'+1' — Ríos Breaks NYCFC Hearts

NYCFC led last-place Montréal for 50 minutes in a must-win home finale — then Daniel Ríos, five minutes after coming on, equalized at 90'+1', and with Columbus winning in Ohio, New York City's season ended at Citi Field.

New York City FC's season died the way so much of it lived — in second-half stoppage time. Leading last-place CF Montréal 1–0 in a must-win home finale at Citi Field, NYCFC conceded in the 91st minute for the seventh time this season, Daniel Ríos curling the equalizer into the top corner five minutes after stepping off the bench. The 1–1 draw, paired with Columbus Crew's 3–0 win over D.C. United, eliminates NYCFC from MLS Cup Playoff contention with a game to spare.

For 50 minutes, the afternoon went to script. NYCFC's opener arrived in the 41st minute off a gift: 17-year-old Montréal goalkeeper Samsy Keita played a soft kick straight into trouble, Nicolás Fernández Mercau intercepted and fed Andrés Perea, who finished into the bottom-left corner for his career-high fourth goal of the season — Fernández Mercau's ninth assist of the year. Matt Freese had already done his part at the other end, leaping to push away an Alexis Sánchez free kick in the 12th minute.

What NYCFC never found was the second goal that would have ended the argument. Hannes Wolf, Luighi and Raul Gustavo all had chances to extend the lead, and when Luighi broke free in the 67th minute, Keita — atoning for his error — stood tall and kept it 1–0. The longer it stayed that way, the louder the old fear got. This team had already conceded six second-half stoppage-time goals this season.

The seventh arrived right on schedule. In the 86th minute Montréal sent on Daniel Ríos for Hryhoriy Synchuk; five minutes later, a James Sands giveaway sprang the visitors, Luca Petrasso won the ball and played it across from the end line, and Ríos charged into the box, beat his man and sent his seventh goal of the season into the top-left corner past Freese. It was Montréal's first goal since October 17, scored by a substitute who had been on the field for five minutes.

NYCFC threw everything at the final minutes — Agustín Ojeda denied, Keaton Parks blocked, Fernández Mercau blocked from close range in the ninth minute of stoppage time — but the math had already closed in Ohio. Columbus's win lifted the Crew to 44 points; NYCFC (9-12-12, 39 points) can reach only 42, below ninth-place Orlando City's 43. The Pigeons miss the playoffs for just the third time in club history, and they finish 0-4-1 in their last five meetings with Montréal — the league's bottom team, and their personal nightmare. Pascal Jansen's side closes the season at D.C. United on November 7 with nothing left to play for but pride.
