The biggest night British boxing has ever staged has its co-main event, and it is a genuinely dangerous piece of matchmaking. Deontay Wilder will fight Jai Opetaia at heavyweight on Friday, December 11 at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on the Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua card, organisers announced Wednesday. Turki Alalshikh posted the bout on X, Netflix confirmed it shortly after, and Dana White — whose Zuffa Boxing promotes Opetaia and who co-promotes the event with The Ring — said it loudest: “BOOOOOM!!!! Wilder vs Opetaia is OFFICIAL in Cardiff, Wales. Wilder has a 95% knockout rate and Opetaia is undefeated 31-0.”

“The co-main event is officially set,” White added, per talkSPORT. “These two guys have a combined 67 knockouts. You do not want to miss this fight, live only on Netflix.” The bout is the first undercard fight announced for the card, which was announced in September and bills itself as “Boxing’s Biggest Night.” It streams live globally on Netflix at no additional cost to subscribers.

A cruiserweight walks into the deep end

Opetaia is not dipping a toe in. The 31-year-old Australian is the Ring cruiserweight champion and a two-time IBF titleholder, unbeaten in 31 fights with 24 knockouts, and he is coming off a seventh-round stoppage of former WBC champion Noel Mikaelian in defence of his Ring belt, Sports Illustrated reported. His road here ran through the sanctioning bodies: the IBF has stripped him twice — the second time this year, after he signed with White’s Zuffa Boxing — and talkSPORT reports he is in a legal battle with the body. A few months ago he was talking about unifying the cruiserweight division. Instead, he is spending his third fight of the year at heavyweight.

The dimensions are the story within the story. Opetaia stands 6-foot-2 with a 76-inch reach; Wilder is 6-foot-7 with an 83-inch reach, per Combat Sports UK. Opetaia is the sharper technician by a mile and ten years younger. Wilder owns the single most concussive right hand of his era, and it has never once cared about the other man’s résumé.

One more big stage for the Bronze Bomber

Wilder, 41, is 45-4-1 with 43 knockouts, but the recent ledger is honest about where he stands: four losses in his last seven fights, including two to Tyson Fury and defeats by Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang that derailed a long-discussed Joshua fight, per Sports Illustrated. He has won his last two — against Tyrrell Herndon and, in April in London, a split decision over Derek Chisora. He had been in negotiations to face Oleksandr Usyk, Reuters reported, before the Cardiff call came. There is a neatness to the booking nobody in the building will miss: Wilder’s comeback fight takes place on the same bill as Fury, the man who took his title, and Joshua, the man he never got to fight.

Why it works

Strip the promotion away and the fight is a clean question. Can an unbeaten cruiserweight champion’s skill survive a division where one clean right hand rewrites the evening? Opetaia risks the zero, and delays everything waiting for him back at cruiserweight — Sports Illustrated notes a David Benavidez fight is that division’s other super-fight — for a heavyweight launchpad no cruiserweight has been handed in years. Wilder risks what is left of his name against a younger champion who will not stand in front of him the way a 40-something Chisora did. Somebody’s story changes on December 11, underneath the biggest main event British boxing has ever made.

The heavyweight division is having a loud week in general. Terence Crawford spent Tuesday night on X pitching himself into the Mayweather–Garcia conversation, and now Wilder and Opetaia have the date, the stadium and the poster. The rest of the Cardiff undercard is still to be announced — and after this opening entry, it has plenty to live up to.
