Sixty-eight finals, and the night belonged to the comebacks. The Guardians finished off the White Sox 2-0 in a winner-take-all ALDS Game 5 and punched their ticket to the ALCS, the Sooners ripped 17 unanswered fourth-quarter points to stun Texas in the Red River Rivalry, and Georgia walked out of Tuscaloosa with the kind of road win that decides the SEC. Here's everything that happened.
MLB: Williams' 12 strikeouts send Cleveland to the ALCS
October baseball doesn't get more winner-take-all than this. Gavin Williams struck out 12 over 5.2 scoreless innings, the Guardians' bullpen slammed the door the rest of the way, and Cleveland beat the White Sox 2-0 in ALDS Game 5 — winning the series 3-2 and setting up an ALCS date with the Rays.
Two runs. That's all it took, because Williams was untouchable — one hit, two walks, and a dozen strikeouts against a White Sox lineup that had looked in control after taking the first two games of the series. Chicago had already been pushed to the brink twice in Cleveland and never recovered: the Guardians won three of the last four, and the last two on the road and at home by a combined 11-5.
The ALCS is now a series of survivors. The Rays swept the Yankees out of the division series without breaking a sweat; the Guardians needed every one of five games and three straight backs-to-the-wall wins to get here. Cleveland took the season's final two ALDS games by a combined 11-5, and if Williams' Game 5 is any indication of the form the rotation is hitting, Tampa's rested bats are walking into something. College football: Red River goes to the Sooners in a fourth-quarter storm
Oklahoma 27, Texas 24. The Longhorns led 17-7 at halftime and looked like they were running away with the Red River Rivalry — then the Sooners dropped 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and walked out of the Cotton Bowl with the most important win of their season. Texas' offense vanished after the break while Oklahoma found a gear nobody saw coming.
And that was only the start of the chaos. Kentucky took down LSU 35-34 in overtime after trailing 17-7 at the half, UCLA went into Autzen and shocked Oregon 17-15, and Illinois survived Michigan State 38-37 in overtime after blowing a 20-7 halftime lead. USC went to Happy Valley and left with a 31-23 win over Penn State, breaking a 17-17 halftime tie with a 14-6 second half. Indiana trailed Nebraska 10-3 at the half, then scored 14 in the fourth to steal a 20-17 win in Lincoln.
The blowouts were just as loud: Notre Dame hammered Stanford 58-7, Ohio State rolled Maryland 45-16, Ole Miss hung 52 on Vanderbilt, and Oregon State dropped 66 on San Diego State. Also in the books: Georgia Tech 28, Duke 25; Virginia 28, Syracuse 25; Tennessee 24, Arkansas 17; Missouri 27, Texas A&M 6; Wake Forest 38, NC State 14; Arizona State 30, Hawai'i 12; UNLV 13, North Dakota State 7; Army 20, Tulane 17; Navy 34, Tulsa 26; Arizona 52, West Virginia 31; Boise State 38, Fresno State 31; and Purdue 41, Minnesota 13. The big-picture takeaway: Georgia's Tuscaloosa escape keeps the Bulldogs alone atop the SEC pecking order, Oklahoma's Red River comeback puts the Sooners back in the playoff conversation, and Kentucky and UCLA just became the teams nobody wants to see on the schedule.
