Good afternoon. This morning's wrap ended with Pope Leo heading into surgery in Rome. By 2 p.m. Pacific, the Vatican had confirmed a cancer diagnosis, a Las Vegas courtroom had closed a 30-year chapter in hip-hop history, Wall Street's biggest banks had split sharply on earnings, and the Champions League had delivered a full set of early results. Here is what actually moved since this morning.
1. Pope Leo's Surgery Confirms Lung Cancer; Lower Lobe Removed
Pope Leo XIV, 71, underwent surgery Tuesday at Rome's Gemelli hospital, and the Vatican said tests confirmed lung adenocarcinoma, USA Today reported, and the Associated Press reported the surgery lasted about 90 minutes with no complications, with surgeons removing the lower lobe of his right lung. The Vatican said the operation was successful with no complications, and the pope is expected to spend about a week in the hospital, with audiences canceled through October 20.
This morning he was heading in for removal of a small, localized nodule — our earlier report is at Pope Leo's hospital surgery. What is next is the recovery timeline and any further treatment the Vatican discloses.
2. Keffe D Sentenced to 40 Years to Life in Las Vegas for Tupac Shakur's Murder
Duane “Keffe D” Davis, 63, was sentenced Tuesday in Las Vegas to 40 years to life, the Associated Press reported, in coverage also reported by USA Today for first-degree murder in the 1996 killing of Tupac Shakur — 20 years to life for the murder, plus a consecutive 20 years to life for a deadly-weapon enhancement, with credit for time already served. Davis was convicted in August and is the only person ever charged in the case; his lawyer said he plans to appeal.
Our full sentencing coverage is at Keffe D sentenced. Thirty years after the shooting near the Strip, the criminal case itself is now closed, barring that appeal.
3. Bank Earnings Split: JPMorgan Misses, Goldman Blows Past Estimates
Four major banks reported third-quarter results Tuesday morning, and the picture was mixed. JPMorgan posted net income of $15.3 billion, or $5.57 per share, missing expectations, while Goldman Sachs reported $18.68 billion in net revenue, well above estimates, helped by a sharp jump in equities trading. Citigroup and Wells Fargo also reported, with results ahead of consensus on earnings per share.
The split matters because bank earnings open the season and set the tone for consumer and trading readings. Our breakdown is at JPMorgan's rare miss and Goldman's blowout.
4. Champions League Early Results: Arsenal, Barcelona and Atletico Roll; Brugge Stun Inter
Matchday 2 delivered a busy early window Tuesday. Arsenal beat Lille 3-0, Barcelona won 4-1 at Galatasaray, Atletico Madrid beat Manchester United 2-0, Villarreal beat Napoli 3-1, and Club Brugge edged Inter 4-3 in Milan. Sporting won 2-0 at Lens and Sabah beat Slavia Prague 2-0 in the earlier kickoffs.
Our early wrap is at Champions League early wrap, with a preview of the Atletico-United match at Matchday 2 preview. More fixtures follow Wednesday.
5. Netflix Drops the First Trailer for Greta Gerwig's Narnia
Netflix released the first trailer Tuesday for Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, Greta Gerwig's adaptation of the C.S. Lewis prequel, a day after unveiling the poster. The film stars David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell, with Daniel Craig as Uncle Andrew, Emma Mackey as Jadis, and Meryl Streep voicing Aslan.
The rollout is unusually theatrical for Netflix: IMAX previews begin February 10, 2027, a wide theatrical release follows February 12, and streaming arrives April 2. Early reaction will help decide whether more Narnia films follow.
6. Hurricane Isaias Recovery: Mail Resumes in Northwest Florida, Death Toll Now Five
Postal service resumed Tuesday in Northwest Florida communities hit by Hurricane Isaias, across 60 Panhandle ZIP codes affected by the suspension. Officials now put the storm's death toll at five, and school closures remain uneven: Santa Rosa County schools stay closed until Monday, October 19, while Okaloosa and Walton County schools are set to reopen Wednesday.
Isaias made landfall near Destin as a Category 2 storm. Recovery — power, schools and mail — is now the story, county by county, through the rest of the week.
7. Games Tuesday: Battlefield 6 Lands on Game Pass, Valor Mortis Launches Day One
Battlefield 6 joined Xbox Game Pass on Tuesday for Ultimate and PC subscribers, alongside the day-one launch of the first-person soulslike Valor Mortis and Deep Dish Dungeon. Planet Zoo 2 also released Tuesday, adding fully aquatic and flying species, and Apple kicked off App Store Indie Games Week with seven indie titles making their App Store debut.
Our Game Pass coverage is at Battlefield 6 on Game Pass and Planet Zoo 2 launch. It is a crowded release day before Modern Warfare 4 campaign early access on Friday.
8. Hollywood Burbank Airport Opens Its $1.3 Billion New Terminal
Hollywood Burbank Airport opened its replacement terminal to the public Tuesday — a $1.3 billion, 355,000-square-foot, all-electric building that replaces the 1930 facility. It keeps the same 14 gates and the airport's signature outdoor walk to board, while adding a centralized ticketing hall, a single security checkpoint and indoor baggage claim.
Our opening-day report is at Burbank's new terminal opens. Travelers this week should allow extra time while entrances, parking and rideshare pickup settle into the new layout.
