Assassin's Creed began in 2007 at Ubisoft Montreal, growing out of ideas first explored for a Prince of Persia project. Its breakthrough was not a single weapon but a way of moving: Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad could climb almost any surface, sprint across rooftops, dive into crowds and vanish on a bench or in a hay cart.

Around that parkour sat a clear stealth loop — scout from a viewpoint, gather information, strike a target, then escape as the city raised the alarm. The Holy Land cities of the Third Crusade, Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus, were built as social spaces as much as maps, where blending mattered as much as blades. Later games refined the climbing, combat and crowd systems, but that original promise still defines the series: history you can run across, and a killer who disappears in plain sight.
