Cardae Mack's 154-Yard Breakout Powers Arizona State Past Hawaii 30-12

The Short Version

  • Arizona State beat Hawaii 30-12 on Saturday night at Mountain America Stadium, rebounding from the 55-19 home loss to Baylor a week earlier. ASU improved to 3-2; Hawaii fell to 1-5.
  • True freshman Cardae Mack broke out: 13 carries for a career-high 154 yards and two touchdowns — the most rushing yards by an ASU freshman since Keegan Herring's 197 against Northwestern in 2005.
  • The game was delayed 40 minutes at halftime by lightning. ASU led 17-6 at the break and broke it open with Mack's 67-yard third-quarter scoring run.
  • It was Arizona State's first win over Hawaii in 52 years, dating to December 7, 1974. The Sun Devils' defense allowed just 316 yards — its lowest total in three weeks.

Before Saturday's game, as she celebrated her son's birthday, Cardae Mack's mother asked Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham a simple question: is my boy going to play today? Boy, did he ever. The true freshman running back carried 13 times for a career-high 154 yards and two touchdowns — more than he'd gained all season combined — as the Sun Devils beat Hawaii 30-12 on a wet, stormy Saturday night at Mountain America Stadium. It was the breakout nobody on the depth chart saw coming, and exactly the kind of night Arizona State needed after getting embarrassed 55-19 by Baylor a week earlier.

The run that changed the night

The signature moment arrived with 51 seconds left in the third quarter. Hawaii punter Gehrig Heil had blasted a 63-yard punt that pinned Arizona State at its own 4-yard line. Mack answered with runs of 4, 9 and 16 yards, then found daylight and broke free for a 67-yard touchdown that stretched a 17-6 halftime edge to 24-6. The single run topped everything he'd done before Saturday — he'd entered the night with just 60 yards on nine carries across the three games he'd played. The crowd barely had time to settle back in before the rout was on.

Mack's first college touchdown had come earlier in the night, a 1-yard plunge out of the wildcat package that put Arizona State ahead 14-3 with 9:56 left in the second quarter. By the end of the night, the freshman was averaging 11.8 yards per carry, and his snap share had steadily grown as the game went on — senior running back Kyson Brown had opened with five carries for 29 yards before Mack simply took the job over in the second half.

Boley, Reed Harris build the lead

Quarterback Cutter Boley did the early work that made Mack's heroics possible. He completed nine of his first 12 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown in building the 17-6 halftime lead, and finished 21-of-31 for 189 yards and two scores. An 18-yard scoring strike to Reed Harris and Mack's 1-yard wildcat plunge put ASU ahead 14-3 late in the second quarter, and the Sun Devils never trailed. Reed Harris finished with eight catches for 91 yards and two touchdowns, a career night of his own on the outside.

Hawaii had its moments. Quarterback Micah Alejado went 25-of-49 for 252 yards with a 32-yard touchdown strike to Audric Harris with 12:41 left in the fourth quarter — but the two-point conversion pass fell incomplete and the Rainbow Warriors trailed 24-12, which is as close as they got. Alejado also threw an interception to Kyan McDonald in the third quarter, a takeaway that set up the field position swing that became Mack's long touchdown. The Rainbow Warriors managed just 64 rushing yards on 22 carries all night.

The defense bounced back too

Lost in the Mack celebration: this was a defensive response game. After getting torched by Baylor a week earlier, defensive coordinator Brian Ward's unit held Hawaii to 316 yards of total offense — the lowest total it has allowed in three weeks. The Sun Devils recorded three sacks, and freshman defensive lineman Julian Hugo posted a two-sack performance of his own. His first sack forced a 12-yard loss that set up a missed 51-yard Hawaii field goal; his second forced a punt that opened the door for Mack's 67-yard touchdown. McDonald, a junior defensive back, secured his first career interception — and got the loudest compliment of the night from junior linebacker Martell Hughes, who called McDonald one of the quieter guys on the team and said he was proud to watch him change the game.

The line deserves credit too. ASU's offensive line opened holes for Mack all night even with junior Makua Pule starting in place of junior center Tana Alo-Tupuola, who Dillingham said was out for personal reasons. No timetable was given for Alo-Tupuola's return, but with Mack's contact balance and tackle-breaking ability, the rushing attack may have just found its identity regardless of who's snapping the ball.

The story behind the breakout

The numbers tell one story; Mack's weekend tells another. He played with his mother in the stands, his father gone a year this week, and after the game he said everything he does is for his family — that making them happy is what makes him happy. Dillingham's assessment was pure coach-speak with a heart in it: Mack is the person he is because of his mother, she did a great job raising him, he played well — and if he's going to play well, he's going to get the ball more. That's how it works. Mack himself credited practice: everybody did their part, he's been practicing hard and doing everything right, and now it's paying off.

Mack was one of ASU's "Texas2Tempe" recruiting additions, and his 154 yards were the most by a Sun Devil freshman running back since Keegan Herring went for 197 against Northwestern in 2005. In his fifth career NCAA game, the newly minted 19-year-old may have just solved Arizona State's search for a reliable running game.

What it means for the season

This was ASU's final non-conference game of the regular season, and it was the bounce-back the schedule demanded. At 3-2, the Sun Devils can wash out the Baylor embarrassment with a genuine offensive identity and a defense that remembered how to play. The Big 12 grind starts October 17 with a trip to Texas Tech in Lubbock — a real measuring stick. If Mack is a 154-yard player now, and Hugo is a two-sack player now, and the defense holds like this again, that trip gets interesting. Hawaii, meanwhile, fell to 1-5 and hosts New Mexico on October 17, still searching for answers on both sides of the ball.
